Educate and Empower

The first seminar was held in Term 3 and focused on ‘Women in Sports’. This seminar highlighted the incredible sporting achievements of a panel of five students— Astrid Thomas (12H), Ellie Kendall (12G), Zoe McElwaine (11G), Amarlie Evans (10O), Holly Fleming (10L)—and an ex-Olympian and teacher, Mrs Sally Callie. The panel were asked many questions by eager fellow students and spoke passionately about why sport is so important to stay engaged with throughout secondary school.

Educate and Empower is a student-led initiative where we talk about topics that are important in the community, share ideas, and support peers. This year, we held two key events and a bake stall to raise awareness and funds for important issues in society.

The second seminar was held early in Term 4 and focused on ‘Women, Children, and the importance of Human Rights’. This seminar, presented by Ashley Foster-Mcginn (12B), used the situation in Gaza as a case study to discuss the impacts that conflicts have on women and children. This was followed up by a bake stall which raised funds for Save the Children, to provide medical and psychosocial aid, as well as access to education, to those living in the war-torn area of Gaza. F1 in Schools

2024 has been the first year of the F1 in Schools Club. Having both attended the Formula 1 in Melbourne before, we are passionate about pursuing a future career in Formula 1, and this club is a great stepping stone towards that goal. F1 in Schools is a program that allows students to apply engineering, entrepreneurial, and teamwork skills. The main objective is to design and create a race car, but also develop a portfolio with marketing strategies and sponsorship efforts. This comprehensive approach not only improves our technical skills, but also creates a deeper understanding of the business and operational aspects of Formula 1. In July of this year, we had the opportunity to visit Brisbane Grammar School, where we were introduced to the specialised machinery used to build their F1 cars. This visit provided us with insight into the level of precision and teamwork required to succeed in this competition and gave us a clearer idea of what it takes to compete at a high level.

The Club is still relatively new and growing, meaning new opportunities and learning experiences arise, keeping the experience fun and exciting. Thanks to Mrs Nisha Swanston and Mr Steven Van der Ros the F1 in Schools program has successfully begun at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. Olivia Basile (10B) and Meg Ellem (10B)
