Clubs and Activities On Friday at lunchtimes, Anime enthusiasts meet in the Anime Club to unwind while watching and discussing light-hearted shows. The open club serves as a casual retreat from studying where all students are welcome to either engage through art and passionate discussion, or to simply watch Anime with friends. This year, the Anime Club continued watching the heartwarming but endlessly comedic slice-of-life, Spy x Family , before moving onto the romantic comedy, Kaguya-sama: Love is War . In this romcom, two excessively competitive student council members engage in a series of complicated mental battles to avoid being the first to confess their feelings for each other. As a Club, we discussed the many similarities between the two shows, where a combination of Anime tropes and archetypes resulted in remarkably similar central characters, both aesthetically and personality-wise. The Club has been glad to welcome several students this year, both consistent members and occasional visitors; we hope to continue our passion into next year. Athene

Athene is an invitation-only society that provides an avenue for Year 11 and 12 BGGS and BGS students to collaborate and engage in political and philosophical discussion. At the end of Year 10, participants are nominated by their teachers based on their affinity for discussion and their interest in challenging both familiar and foreign ideas. At each meeting, Year 12 students from each school present papers on topics of interest such as: ‘The ethics of legal euthanasia’; ‘Are humans inherently good or bad?’; and ‘Love in the time of Artificial Intelligence’. Each presentation is followed by 40 minutes of discussion where all members can challenge, agree, or question the ideas raised. BGGS English teacher, Ms Jo Genders, and BGS English Teacher, Mr Howes, help coordinate the meetings, however discussion is led by the students. Being a part of Athene is an amazing opportunity as it’s only when our ideas are tested against the perspectives of others that they are truly solidified. Athene provides girls with the opportunity to make lasting friendships with the preceding and succeeding BGGS Athene cohorts as well as with BGS boys. Athene has been one of my favourite opportunities at BGGS, and I will carry the skills it has taught me through the rest of my life.
