Science A Retrospective

When coming into Year 7—based on their past experience— students often categorise Science as a ‘hard’ or sometimes ‘boring’ subject. However, after getting their first taste of science at BGGS, students' opinions immediately change. The program is set up to slowly immerse students in the world of science, building excitement and enthusiasm as they learn more about the world and environment. Through Years 7 to 9, students gently get a view of what each science is about. From studying a Physics unit like ‘A Force is a Force’ and a Biology unit like ‘Living it up!’ in Year 7, to learning about celestial objects and radiation in Year 9, the courses offer the basics of each science—perfect for developing interest and guiding senior subject selection. The junior course doesn't only offer the three main science disciplines, but provides, what the current Year 9 students call their favourite area of study—‘Earth and Space Science’. When you reach the senior years (Years 10 to 12), the generic Science splinters off into Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. These subjects become more specific and focused, slowly getting into more detail and adding to the solid foundation established in the junior years. It is not until you reach the senior years that you appreciate how the groundwork of junior science develops insight into the commonalities of the three— now separate—subjects.

Ultimately, what differentiates the Science Faculty at BGGS from other schools is not only the academic curriculum curated to teach students in the most effective way possible, but its ability to transform students’ perception of science from ‘difficult and boring’ to ‘interesting and ubiquitous’. The dedication of the teachers and staff not only ignites a lifelong passion for learning, but also a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of the scientific and social aspects of the world around us.
