Mathematics Maths at BGGS
Formulate Maths at BGGS is integral. This report will outline qualities reflected in BGGS maths students, helping them strive.
Specialist Maths—Creativity Specialist Maths is offered in Years 11 and 12 and covers areas including proofs, vectors, matrices, complex numbers, and calculus. Specialist is recommended for those looking to extend and challenge themselves with exciting new abstract concepts and requires creativity when solving complex problems. ‘What I love about Spec is that its content challenges me in a way that allows me to appreciate the true beauty of mathematics.’ (Kaiyu Su (12R)) Competition Maths—Friendship To further extend students’ mathematical abilities, BGGS offers a range of extension mathematics, including competitions. Competitions allow students to exercise problem-solving skills outside of the classroom. These competitions also become a place for students to meet like-minded peers and forge friendships. ‘Competition Maths isn't just about running the numbers. I've made incredible friends through the shared experiences of the Maths Team Challenge.’ (Emma Wong, 12W) Evaluation—Teachers Throughout our time in BGGS Maths, we’ve learnt to work under pressure and persist with challenges we face. Maths is creative, constantly prompting us to explore new concepts and innovate solutions to complex problems. Maths would not be the same without the spectacular aid of our teachers, whose passion and knowledge shaped our studies.
Solve Junior Mathematics—Curiosity
Throughout Years 7 to 9, girls cover areas including algebra, geometry, probability, and so much more! In Year 7, girls employ problem-solving abilities to compete in the Interhouse Mathematics Competition. ‘My teacher has helped and encouraged me to look into different concepts and ideas.’ (Enming Pan (7H)) ‘I find problem solving really satisfying and I love working it General Maths offers a practical approach with a real-world perspective on solving problems and challenges. Students start by building a strong numeracy foundation, before introducing more complex applications in Years 11 and 12. General Maths requires persistence as students must learn to apply their maths concepts to a variety of practical situations. Mathematical Methods—Dedication Mathematical Methods is enjoyed by students from Years 10 to 12. Students learn about everything from probability, to graphing, to calculus. To stay on top of the large variety of areas in Methods, students approach the subject with dedication. through with my teacher.’ (Allegra Boccolacci (8R)) General Mathematics—Persistence
