Humanities

Humanities at BGGS provides a diverse range of subjects for students to explore, beginning with studies in Year 7. We study BGGSs fascinating origins, ancient societies, notions of place and liveability in Geography, and revolutions prior to the 20th century. From this starting point, students who wish to continue studying Humanities can choose the following: Ancient History; Modern History; Geography; Economics; and Accounting. Each subject provides students with a broader understanding of the world—both past and present.

The Ancient History elective is first offered to Year 10 students. Adopting their own archaeologist persona and performing an excavation, students are able to simulate an on-site archaeological investigation. Year 11 students can dive deeper into Egyptian history, concluding their studies with a specific focus on fifth century Athens. Year 12 Ancient History has a set focus on rich Roman history—from the fall of the Republic to the rise of Augustus. By digging into the past, students gain insight into the ideas and practices that have contributed to the development of contemporary society. Moving through the 20th century, Modern History students explore several topics starting with the suffragette movement, then throughout the decades to both World Wars and the surrounding events, finishing off with a study of the Vietnam War. The Modern History course allows students to investigate key causes and reasons for why events took place, enhancing each student’s ability to think critically about the world surrounding us today. Geography helps us understand the earth’s history and place. Students commence their senior study of Geography focusing on environmental stewardship and reflecting on global population wellbeing. Year 10 Geography inspires students through the study of Youth Agents of Change, and Year 11 and 12 Geography focuses on the long-term impacts of human activities on the environment and sustainable development.

BGGS challenges the stereotype that women don’t belong in Finance, with both Accounting and Economics being popular subjects in each senior year level. Economics teaches students about the importance of world events and government decisions on the economy, further enhancing our understanding of the world around us. Meanwhile, Accounting zooms in and enables students to interpret an individual business’ financial information.
