International Women’s Day Concert

Open Mic is an incredible opportunity for students at BGGS to showcase their incredible singing talent to the School community. It aims to give students the chance to sing in front of a live audience, allowing them to gain confidence through their performances. In addition, it also offers a safe and encouraging environment for students, inspiring them to perform their own compositions; explore different genres; and perform with friends through duets, trios or even quartets! At Open Mic, students can sing with a backing track, or accompany themselves with an instrument—the possibilities are endless! Open Mic is for everyone, not just singers. You can join Open mic and be part of the tech team for example, creating PowerPoints to showcase our performers; or be really technical and control the microphones and mixer during the performances. Open Mic is held on Friday lunch every week, and we are always keen for more performers and an expanding audience to support the overwhelming talent that we receive. Chloe Chan (9L) Open Mic One of the signature music events of the year is the International Women’s Day (IWD) Concert. After realising that only five per cent of classical music performed was written by women, the Instrumental Music department set out to rectify this issue—by holding a concert dedicated solely to music written by women. Today, the IWD Concert has evolved into an uplifting celebration where music is used to empower women and girls both within our school community and internationally. This year, the IWD Concert reached a notable achievement, with every ensemble performing a piece composed by a BGGS student or staff member. The student compositions were all winning works in the annual Composing Competition, and form a testament to the remarkable creativity and expertise of our student musicians. As well as celebrating local female composers, the Instrumental Music staff worked to find unique and beautiful pieces from around the world to perform in this concert; Symphony Orchestra particularly enjoyed performing an orchestral arrangement of Angela Perez Perez’ Enheduanna ! Overall, the combined efforts of students and staff made the IWD Concert a truly wonderful evening! Dorothy Rae (12G)
