Senior Drama Production

Two schools, both alike in dignity, performed Romeo and Juliet as the Years 10 to 12 co-production in the BGS Great Hall. While we are sure everyone knows Shakespeare's most famous love story of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, for our production, we brought it into the modern day. After the third public civil brawl between the Montagues and the Capulet’s, Tybalt— Juliet’s cousin—decides that a massive party is just the thing the Capulet’s need to celebrate the victory. A mash-up of Doja Cat, a remix of The Beach Boy’s classic, God Only Knows , and the perfect party song, Perfect Exceeder , soundtracked the very moment Romeo and his crew snuck into the Capulet party and the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet began. Confetti canons, smoke machines, and even a fully decked out van driven by director, Mr Newth, made this production a spectacle that no one could take their eyes off for a second.

Having the opportunity to do a co-production after so many years, was a monumental occasion. Both schools are usually completely independent from each other, so having the opportunity to get to know the staff and students next door over the five months of rehearsals was amazing. Thank you so much to Ms Euler Welsh for her constant support of the Arts at Girls Grammar; Mrs Katrina Riveros for making this play such an amazing experience for not only us but the boys as well; and of course, thank you to our director, Mr Newth, and all of the BGS staff that welcomed us so well into Boys Grammar. Parting is such sweet sorrow, but from all of the Girls Grammar cast and crew, we thank everyone and anyone who came to see the shows and supported this wild process. Jaimee Jessop (11R)

Grammar Dance

The focus of Grammar Dance for 2024 was to create a friendly environment for any of the girls here to dance; often to express how they feel. It is our school’s Dance program that currently meets weekly on a Wednesday morning. Although many girls in the program have dance experience past or current, it is an open and inclusive environment that is open to anyone with a love of dance, and all levels of dance experience. This group is currently made up of girls from Year 7 to 10, but is open for girls up to Year 12. I love the variation of what we do every week: we stretch; try new skills; and learn a combination in the styles of lyrical, hip hop or jazz. Dance is an amazing way to express how I’m feeling, and also move and exercise—

it’s the highlight of every Wednesday for me. The major event for this year was performing at Open Day, in which our coach, Lily, helped prepare us, so we were ready for it. At Open Day, we taught a dance routine to some younger future students, while an audience looked on. We couldn’t have had a successful year without our wonderful coordinator, Ms Belinda Lindsay, and the help of our amazing coach, Lily Biddle. I hope this will inspire future Girls Grammar students to join this wonderful opportunity, as it really has helped me to learn new skills. Amy Beckingsale (9L) and Charlotte Yorke (9L)
