LIBELLUM SOCIETY

The Libellum Society is BGGS' book club that allows avid readers to meet every Friday to discuss recommendations and organise bookish events and fundraisers. We have more than 50 members across all year levels. We kicked off 2023 with our Year 7 welcome event, ‘Murder in a Teacup’—a mystery-themed afternoon tea in which our youngest members had to follow clues to solve a crime. In July, students from Years 7, 8 and 9 represented BGGS at the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Readers Cup in the Brisbane North division. Congratulations to our Year 7 and 8 team, comprised Sarah Lloyd (7M), Lucia Granger (7E), Amelia Barber (8B), Phoebe Bird (8B), and Lucy Peterson (8B), who placed second.

Our Libellum Short Story competition was a great success, with many budding writers entering crime, thriller and ghost stories. Well done to our winners Lucy Peterson (8B), Isabelle Chiang (10H) and Lucia Mundt (7R). Other highlights included the Science fiction café in August, the Hard Quiz in Term 4, the Reconciliation Week cupcake and bookstall, and the annual Dymocks adventure in the winter holidays. Throughout the year we have raised money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, raising over $500 for this charity. We would like to extend a special thank you to our Coordinator Ms Rachael Christopherson, Library staff, and all our members. We've had a fun year filled with bookish events and great reading, and we look forward to another chapter next year. Remy Kalinin (9H) and Charlotte Wilson (9G) Libellum Society Captains

MATHAPATTA

Mathapatta is an exciting experience offered to students in Years 9 and 10 who wish to foster a love of Mathematics. It is held at the outdoor education centre, Marrapatta, which makes everything even more special as it allowed us to enjoy nature while learning. One of the most memorable experiences we had while learning at Mathapatta was when we delved into the fascinating world of the motion of the ocean. Mrs Mazzaglia took a creative approach and taught us about the principles behind waves and their mathematical properties.

We explored concepts such as wavelength, frequency, and amplitude, and how they relate to the behaviour of waves in the vast ocean. Furthermore, we embarked on a hands-on activity where we used the principles of parabolas to cook marshmallows. By understanding the trajectory of a parabolic curve, we strategically positioned our marshmallows and let them cook in the sun. The highlight of the experience was when our teacher introduced us to the world of cryptography. We learned how to encrypt and decrypt messages using mathematical algorithms and

techniques, discovering the hidden connections between mathematics and the art of secrecy. Overall, Mathapatta was a fantastic learning opportunity that everyone enjoyed. Many teachers helped to make this wonderful learning opportunity possible, and we would like to thank Ms Munro, Mr O’Loughlin, Ms Bailey, Mrs Frazer, Mrs Briggs as well as Ms Wood and all the other Marrapatta staff involved. Finally, we thank Mrs Mazzaglia, who coordinated this incredible mathematical adventure; we’ll never forget it! Lily Burgess (10E) and Emily Smith (10E)
