DESIGN CLUB

with epoxy would look. I used various tools to strip the bark, and cut and measure the wood using the machinery on hand. Then I joined the two pieces together using wooden biscuits, and sealed it together with my choice of epoxy, before finishing it off by sanding it, engraving my personalised design and finally, oiling it. During this time, I had amazing support from teachers, Mr Skillen, Ms Swanston, and Ms Dawson, who provided encouragement, support and guidance. Each week I would look forward to going to Design Club and creating my first masterpiece, and now it is used to show my pride in something beautiful that I created, and I cannot wait to create more.

made intricate jewellery boxes shaped like hearts, and we were able to fill them with a unique pair of earrings that were handmade. What made Design Club even more interesting was that my friends and I could gather around during lunch time and have amazing conversations while continuing to work on projects we love. The variety of things we created as a group included wooden camping chairs with fabric seats, unique cheeseboards using epoxy and wood, and laser-cut jewellery. My cheeseboard journey began with selecting two different pieces of sawed wood that still had the bark on it. I was able to choose my own pieces of wood, and loved the feel of the wood, the unique grain and texture that ran through it. I could envisage how putting two different pieces of wood together

I was drawn to Design Club, which is held during lunch times, as my interest was sparked with the ability to create things during design lessons since Year 7. I love the fact that I can learn to use interesting tools and machinery, working with different materials to create something unique and personalised. For Mother’s Day, each Design Club member

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

In 2023, Digital Photography definitely fired up the arts! We welcomed many new members, especially from the younger year levels, which was a wonderful sight to see. During Term 1, our club captured many beautiful moments and achievements at Interhouse Swimming, Cross Country, and Athletics carnivals. A large number of club members entered photography competitions, such as the Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards, and it was amazing to see the number of participants that entered. Across Terms 2 and 3, the Club continued to explore the nuances and beauty of photography through macro and micro photography workshops, which was particularly engaging for members as they refined their skills and experimented with the School’s new DSLR cameras. A highlight of the year was our refraction workshop held in Term 3, in which students investigated the way that curved glassware distorts objects and alters the diffusion of light. Students also extended the activity and had some more fun by adding coloured dye to the water in the glasses and enjoying the influence of colour on the final result. The workshop also had a station for students to explore the Bokeh effect, an aesthetic blur produced in out-of-focus backgrounds of an image. This effect was achieved by focusing on objects in the field of view, including teddy bears, tiaras and feathers, and then placing coloured fairy lights behind them, which were seen as hazy circles in the shot. Depths of view were experimented with to maximise the size of the blurred circles, and different-shaped filters were also attached to camera lens to change the shape of the circles into hearts, butterflies, and flowers. Overall, the club has had an impressive year with many new initiatives introduced, and members have had many opportunities to enhance and refine their skills in the field, through Interhouse carnivals and School performances. We would like to sincerely thank our supportive and dedicated coordinator, Mrs Loye, as well as talented photographer, Mrs McCabe, for their invaluable advice and support of the program this year.
