HUMANITIES
The Humanities exposes us to thought-provoking concepts and diverse perspectives that offer valuable insights into the human experience. As students, the subjects within the Humanities equip us with analytical skills that have significant practical application and enhance our understanding of the world. In Year 7, all students study Humanities before moving into History in Year 8 and 9 with elective Geography. Through these subjects, students learn about various historical periods, explore sustainability and develop an informed interest in the events and circumstances shaping our present. In Year 10, Grammar Girls learn about fascinating topics ranging from the Trojan War to Ancient Egyptian mythology. Senior students then go on to learn more about topics such as 5th Century Athens, before delving deeper into Imperial Rome. Starting in Year 10, Modern History explores topics ranging from World War II to American Civil Rights, culminating in a UN summit. Senior students learn about a broad range of topics ranging from the Chinese Communist Revolution to domestic issues such as the Indigenous Struggle for Rights, setting the stage for the final unit: the Vietnam War. Studying Modern History is an excellent way to gain crucial research and analytical skills, equipping us with the tools necessary to evaluate new information, and arrive at informed opinions and decisions in future.
In Economics, we study fundamental economic theories and concepts with a strong emphasis on their real-world applications in today’s global economy. The subject has practical relevance and application, with our assessment pieces involving analysis of the impacts of current events such as COVID-19, and the Ukraine war, on the economy. Engaging in discussions about these ongoing events deepens our comprehension of economic principles and gives us a better understanding of the global economy and its intricacies. Accounting is a highly rewarding subject and the skills developed are applicable across all industries and professions. Year 10 Accounting starts off with the basics: interpreting and preparing financial documents; internal controls; the full accounting process and even using computerised accounting packages such as MYOB. Our lessons in Accounting then build on these fundamental skills for Year 11 and 12 as we expand our knowledge base by learning how to implement GST into transactions, and studying public companies. Geography can be a lot of fun and covers a wide range of eye-opening topics. In Year 10 we began our senior Geography journey by learning about climate change and its impacts on the planet. In Year 11 and 12, we looked at natural hazard zones, sustainable planning, land cover transformations, and population challenges. The subject also offers a variety of interesting learning experiences, with the year 12 Geography students heading up to Marrapatta, and students in Years 9 and 10 traveling to North Queensland.
