The Innovators’ Dilemma
ECOMAN Participating in ECOMAN was an eye-opener to real-world business dynamics. From assuming specific roles in our business to presenting our strategies in a mock annual general meeting (AGM), the program let us learn the complexities of business management in a way that bridged theory and application. A highlight for me was negotiating redundancy payments with the ‘union’. The hands-on experience not only built on our negotiating skills but also highlighted the balance between our company’s profit as well as social, environmental, and competitive factors. The competition itself was a simulated business environment where teams of BGGS and BGS students—without knowing the business decisions of other teams—worked to maximise their success by tweaking many factors of their company. These included the price of products, storage of material, payment of debts, employing workers, dividend payments and more. The AGM was a great opportunity to summarise our decisions and learnings to our 'shareholders' at the end of the competition. In retrospect, ECOMAN has been an amazing experience, providing a deeper understanding of the broader business world. It has left me eager for future opportunities to apply these newfound insights.
