Opti MINDS

D uring Term 3 this year we participated in the Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge. The Challenge is an inter-school, team-based activity and teams can choose from one of three categories: Science and Engineering; Humanities; or Language and Literature. BGGS entered three teams in the Challenge and all three chose the Language and Literature category. Our task was to create a revision of a well- known story with ‘perseverance’ as the theme and to incorporate an extra character from a different work of fiction into the story. We then presented our devised text in a 10-minute video. Our team decided we would bring Harry Potter into Little Red Riding Hood . The other teams brought Dora the Explorer and Sherlock Holmes into the book Hatchet . We had several weeks to complete the task and we were all very proud of our finished stories. The challenge also included a spontaneous round, during which we had five minutes to come up with creative answers to a question. Our team managed to receive Honours in our category, which was very exciting and both our team and another BGGS team received Spirit of Opti-MINDS awards. The Challenge was a fun activity and we are looking forward to participating again next year. Levi Gao (8G) and Dorothy Rae (8G)

T he Short n’ Sweet Drawing Club is a fun and enjoyable club that offers students drawing materials and techniques to make fabulous art. The idea of ‘short n’ sweet’ is to create quick, small drawings for fun that you can take home or show in the Club exhibitions mounted at the end of each term. Each term we explore a different art medium. This year we learned to work in pencil, pen and ink, watercolour, and scraperboard. I had a lot of fun experimenting with different techniques and making beautiful pieces of art to take home. These experiences were fun and relaxing, and I loved extending myself by putting lots of detail into my drawings and learning different techniques and strategies to apply to future art pieces.
