DEBATING
B GGS Debating was off to a strong start at the beginning of the year with more than 250 girls signing up in Term 1 to compete in three different competitions. Despite initial disruptions to the season, as the year progressed we managed to carve out plenty of opportunities to exercise and develop our debating skills. BGGS had five teams compete in the QUT Mooting Competition and one of our Year 11 teams placed as runners-up in the Grand Final. While the Year 12s were not able to participate in the Senior A competition in 2020, the Year 11s were given an opportunity to compete in a condensed version of the same competition in Term 3. Despite a four month debating hiatus, they performed brilliantly and managed to beat a number of more experienced Year 12 debaters from other schools to make their way to the quarter finals.
Meanwhile, two of our Year 12 debaters, Abbey Grice (12E) and Annaka Tong-Law (12M), made it into the final 12 in the State Team trials and Abbey Grice (12E) was selected as the reserve for the Queensland State Team for the second year in a row. Our junior debaters also had a strong year and will be looking to build on their skills in 2021. In Term 2 our Debating Coordinator, Ms Bryne, organised a comedy debate between the Year 11s and 12s and in Term 4, the Year 8s and 9s were able to participate in a Speed D(eb)ating Tournament. Debating has the unique ability to educate girls on world events and grow confidence and speaking skills. We believe strongly that every
BGGS debater has benefited greatly from the sport. Tiarne Graves (12L) and Anika Tong-Law (12M)
D esign Club offers students a practical environment to explore design and an opportunity to self-guide various projects according to their own interests. There are many projects that students are able to do, including earring design and drone, camp chair and breadboard making. Through these projects, students can learn about technical drawing, the use of laser cutters, 3D printers and a variety of other industrial machinery. This experience is fundamental to all design disciplines and has practical applications to supplement studies in engineering, industrial design, architecture and more. Not only that, but students also have the chance to make friends with girls from other Year levels as anyone who is interested in fashion, architecture, product or graphic design are welcome to join the Design Club.
