CALLIGRAPHY CLUB

D ating back thousands of years, Calligraphy ( form of artistic writing that is still prominent in modern culture. The art is influenced by many Japanese principles— one of which is wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi ( ) is a Japanese philosophy that centres on the beauty of imperfections, ephemerality, and simplicity. This idea of wabi-sabi is reflected in Calligraphy through the acceptance of imperfections, the ephemerality of the process, and the simplicity of the strokes. We wish them all the very best for their retirement and thank them wholeheartedly for the skills and expertise they have shared with so many Grammar girls over the years. The Calligraphy Club is sure to continue into 2021. Grammar girls experience a sense of relaxation through this calming activity so, if you need a break from your studies, the Calligraphy door is always open. These skills are also employed in Sumi-e, the art of brush painting. Students create vibrant images depicting the delicate natural forms of flowers, animals and landscapes. Every year, senior students have the opportunity to enter their artworks in an international Sumi-e competition held in Tokyo, Japan. After 20 years of expert instruction, service and loyalty to the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Calligraphy Club, it is with great sadness that we will farewell Mr Eimatsu
