DEBATING

G irls Grammar Debating teams have had a very successful year, with 260 students competing in six different competitions. A large number of girls participated in the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) competition which is held in Terms 2 and 3. Three teams secured a place in their respective grand finals. Congratulations to the 12.1 team who won their division. The hard work and dedication of each Grammar girl was recognised as we won the QDU Schools Championship Trophy for the second consecutive year. In the Brisbane Girls Debating Association competition, our Year 10, Year 11 and Senior A team all placed second. This year we witnessed highly entertaining debates including the Mother and

Daughter Dinner debate, where girls argued mum knows best. The student-teacher debate at Arts Fest was also a highlight. Girls in Year 10 competed in the QUT Law Society High School Mooting competition. The girls competed against teams in Year 11 and 12 to finish in an incredible second place. Eight students competed in the Australian Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships. All girls performed exceptionally well. Congratulations to Abbey Grice (11E), who based on her accumulated performance, was selected in the Australian team to travel to Shanghai in April next year for the World Championships. DESIGN CLUB I was delighted to participate in the BGGS Design Club in my first year at the School. The club provided students with the opportunity to work with amazing teachers and meet other girls and develop friendships. This year I have created many things at Design Club including a breadboard, earrings that I designed and cut in the laser-cutter, a balsa wood plane and coasters that made an epic gift for my dad! This was a great way for me to improve my skills and learn so many new things. I look forward to participating in the club again next year. Sophie List (7E)
