HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION of my biggest interests. I love being physically active and learning different techniques on how to train. All sports are different and that is what’s so enticing about Health and Physical Education (HPE). At Girls Grammar there really is a actively participating in physical activities or contributing to the interesting Health and Physical Education topics discussed in the classroom, it is important to give your best. Over the course of the Year 9 HPE units,
we were introduced to a range of team sports and dance. I particularly enjoyed the softball unit as it was a new team sport which I hadn’t played before and an activity the whole class enjoyed playing together. Along with the physical component, the theory component included many thought- provoking topics which were not only helpful in class, but towards everyday life. Brittany Anderson (9O)
sport for everyone. In our HPE classes, we spent our time learning safety in the pool, athletics on the oval, and learning the ability to control ourselves on bikes. An activity that I found challenging was gymnastics. Perfecting each motion while maintaining my balance proved to be quite the challenge! Throughout the year, HPE has been such a fun and educational experience. We investigated a diverse range of health and sport science topics and a variety of interesting sports. In theory lessons, we worked through content in groups, pairs or individually. We learned about our health and wellbeing, the skeletal and muscular system, and our strengths and weaknesses in terms of fitness components. During physical performance lessons, we were introduced to new sports, like European Handball, and further developed our ball, swimming and lifesaving skills. European Handball was by far the most exciting, fun and interesting sport this year. Although it was unfamiliar at first, it was a game that involved teamwork and cooperation, which in the end, helped the class build our skills together. Divya Naiker (8G)
YEAR 10 HPE T he Year 10 cohort has taken part in many exciting sports units this year, encouraging girls to improve their fitness and learn new skills in a dynamic and fun environment. To begin the year, students discussed the importance of fitness and how it can be improved. We participated in multiple workout and exercise plans and monitored our progress through a series of fitness tests. This allowed us to remain motivated to achieve our personal best. InTerm 2, girls participated in net sports such as Badminton, Tennis and Volleyball through round-robin tournaments. At the same time, we studied health and wellbeing in the classroom as part of the theoretical unit. We learned the importance of healthy relationships and essential self-defence moves. Term 3 was all about on-field sports. Learning new sports such as Softcrosse and Touch Football allowed students to improve and maintain our cardiovascular endurance and learn important teamwork skills in the process. InTerm4, girls completed a resuscitation and leadership theory unit. During physical performance lessons, we had the opportunity to swim in the pool and complete our Bronze Star Lifesaving Award. The knowledge we gained in Year 10 Health and Physical Education has been fundamental in our development as confident, healthy and capable young women.
