YEAR 8 SCIENCE

CURRICULUM

Y ear 8 Science has been an interesting and exciting experience, ranging from how to capture an astronomical photograph, to learning the physics of an atom. In Term 1, we discovered the properties of an atom and its relationship to the periodic table. Term 2 focused on the human respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems and later in the year we learned the awe-inspiring concepts of radiation and nuclear energy. My favourite experiment was at the end of Term 3, where we developed our understanding of UV rays and the effectiveness of sunscreen. Containers were lined with different SPF levels of sunscreen and UV beads placed inside. The beads showed various intensities of colour depending on the amount of UV exposure.

Another highlight was capturing a star cluster, nebula or galaxy picture using the School’s telescopes at the Dorothy Hill Observatory, which we later edited using Adobe Photoshop. Overall, Year 8 Science was a fun and educational experience. Caroline Vujovic (8M)

YEAR 9 SCIENCE I n Year 9 Science, we have studied a wide range of topics. In Biology, we investigated how society has affected the interactions of abiotic and biotic factors in the ecosystem. In Physics, we explored electricity in terms of charges and circuits. In Term 3, we moved onto Chemistry where we delved into atoms, compounds, ions and chemical equations. In Term 4, we studied earth science, focusing on how the Earth changes, over both long and short-term periods. These introductory science units have provided us with knowledge that will be useful as we continue our studies. The world of science is fascinating and here at Girls Grammar, Year 9 Science has been both challenging and enjoyable. Amber Lu (9E)
