KIRSTEN JACK MEMORIAL LEUKAEMIA COMMITTEE

O n Tuesday 23 April, members of the Girls Grammar Service group assisted the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee by selling traditional ribbons, badges and poppies at the School and in the Brisbane CBD. Funds raised were in support of veteran welfare, restoration and construction of war memorials and gravesites, and promoting the spirit of ANZAC through education. ANZAC DAY On several occasions, Grammar girls met at the Spring Hill based ECB kitchen before school to prepare sandwiches for those in need. We enjoyed coming together to prepare different types of sandwiches and found it especially rewarding to know that we were making a difference, one session at a time. These morning sandwich making sessions were very popular, with a large number of students registering their interest to attend. ECB is proud to play a role in helping Grammar girls give back to the local community. In Term 1, ECB held a food drive to collect items such as long-life milk, biscuits and coffee. The School received an overwhelming number of donations which were then distributed to those experiencing homelessness in Brisbane.

T he Kirsten Jack Memorial Leukaemia Committee (KJ) is a group of passionate and like-minded girls from all Year levels, dedicated to supporting young people with cancer. This year we commemorated the 42nd anniversary of the passing of Grammar girl, Kirsten Jack. As the leaders of KJ, we focused on three key objectives—to raise awareness, encourage involvement, and raise funds for cancer research. Our fundraising efforts this year included numerous bake sales, a raffle in Term 1, and the highly anticipated annual KJ Formal Fashion Parade in Term 2, where we enjoyed watching the glamorous Year 12 girls parade their formal dresses. We were excited to see our rocky road and face-painting Open Day stall was a crowd favourite this year. Our handmade Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards were also a huge success. Finishing the year with great spirit, girls spent several of their mornings making and selling badges for Daffodil Day and selling bandannas to raise money for CanTeen. We are proud to report that this year we raised more than $2500. Special thanks to our dedicated group members and KJ coordinators, Dr Farley and Miss Parry for their ongoing support. It has been an honour for us to lead KJ, and we are confident the group will continue to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and support, while carrying on Kirsten’s legacy. EARN AND LEARN STICKER COLLECTION

Girls also attended theANZACCeremony for students at ANZAC Square War Memorial and Parkland in the city on Wednesday 24 April. During the ceremony, Service Captains, Gemma Grattan (12O), and Victoria Hogan (12W), laid a wreath at the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate the sacrifices and contributions of all who have served our nation during war and armed conflict. Appreciating peace, mateship, resilience and inspiring others to do the same through sharing the ANZAC spirit was a key message at the 23rd ANZAC Commemoration Service. As students, we were encouraged to make good use of this peace and the opportunities it affords us, and inspire those around us to do the same. Ella Whyte (12W) WOOLCOCK HOUSE SERVICE CAPTAIN

T his year, Girls Grammar families collected 3398Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers. These stickers were donated to Oonoonba State School in Townsville, which experienced damage and loss of learning supplies from the floods and storms in North Queensland. Other Year 7 students assisted to count the stickers and applied them to the sticker sheets before mailing them to Oonoonba State School. Isabelle Smith (7W) and Sargun Virk (7W)
