CO-CURRICULUM

FROM THE INSTRUMENTAL CAPTAINS

This year, Grammar Singers and Chamber Singers performed with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Choir in their 30th Anniversary Concert at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) on Tuesday 30 July. The Instrumental Music Department celebrated many successes in 2019. Congratulations to Albinoni Strings, conducted by Ms Joesphine Pollicina, on winning first place for the third consecutive year at the Queensland Youth Music Awards and Chamber Winds, conducted by Miss Ashleigh Porter, who won a Gold Award for their performance and secured second place in their division. As part of the Instrumental Music Program, Grammar girls were able to thrive in a nourishing and challenging environment while learning skills that can be applied in all areas of their lives, as well as making lasting friendships and ensemble partnerships. We thank Director of Instrumental Music, Mrs Emma Dron, for her creative vision and ongoing support this year. Rebecca Groves (12H), Laura Verdasco (12G) and Emily Yu (12O) CAPTAINS

I nstrumental Music has been a huge success in 2019. At the beginning of the year we established a goal drawing from the Arts motto, ‘Create, Embark, Discover Your Spark’. We encouraged each girl to find what they love about Instrumental Music, what brings them to their weekly rehearsals and what makes them excited to perform. This year’s music concerts, competitions and masterclasses showcased Grammar girls’ high level of musicianship. From the New Families Concert to the Prossima Program and performing in Villers- Bretonneux for the ANZAC Dawn Service, this year has been filled with extraordinary opportunities for Instrumental Music students. Three of the School’s talented harpists, Aily Chang (7E), Lisa Chang (11E) and Remi Hirayama (9L) participated in a Masterclass with principal harpist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Ms Marie- Perrie Langlamet, as part of the School’s Education Partnership with Queensland Symphony Orchestra. The girls were mentored by and performed in front of Ms Langlamet and are commended on how they absorbed Ms Langlamet’s advice and direction. The International Women’s Day concert was again an empowerment of Grammar girls and women, showcasing musical items composed by women from around the globe in celebration of the event. Girls premiered three commissioned works by contemporary Australian female composers including Hildegard’s Daughters, by Ms Natalie Williams, Taraxum, by Ms Alice Chance, and Unbelonging, by Ms Ellen Kirkwood.
