FROM THE ARTS CAPTAINS BIG DRAMATIC OPENING
P icture this: a whirlwind of colours, a cacophony of sounds, and the smell of string rosin—all simultaneously gracing your senses for five consecutive days. While this sounds like some special otherworldly experience, 1400 Grammar girls were able to witness this fantastic experience in Week 5, Term 2, as the School celebrated Arts Fest.
5-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA: PEOPLE CAME TOGETHER A cross these five days, the Cherrell Hirst Creative Learning Centre was transformed into an artistic oasis, blessed with enormous motto vinyls and colourful fabrics that were draped across the building. Girls from all Year levels, clubs and arts activities came together to celebrate the arts at Girls Grammar and display their talent in many different forms. OUR MESSAGE OUR MOTTO T his year our motto was ‘Create, Embark, Discover Your Spark’. We wanted everyone to feel empowered and a part of something bigger. In the Creative Arts community we embrace quirky strengths and encourage everyone to channel them into art. WHAT WE WANTED TO ACHIEVE T his year as Arts Captains, we pledged to showcase the intricate, ubiquitous and intense nature of the arts. We hoped to convey to people that to create a piece of art an immense amount of time, effort, and willpower must be sacrificed. We also wanted to focus on how the arts act as our primary medium to translate deeper, more socio-political messages and make us reconsider our way of life.
PLANNING U ltimately, we hoped that Arts Fest would encapsulate all of these things and we believe we achieved our goals. Through collaborative planning in the preceding months we were able to create a 1970s inspired ‘haven’ through our graphic presentation and accompanying soundtrack. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED A long with daily music performances, the week kicked off with the much anticipated student-teacher debate. Tuesday saw rousing lunchtime performances by the School’s Percussion Ensembles, led by Mr Cavanough. Concurrently, an Earring-Making Workshop provided students with an opportunity to embrace technology and design. Wednesday’s program featured a string quartet, an open air performance by Chorale, a Gypsy Band concert and individual art students drawing girls’ ‘soul creatures’. Big Band and Contemporary Ensemble featured on Thursday at lunchtime and there was a screen printing workshop after school. To finish the week, we enjoyed a Grammar Dance performance, slam poetry and busking on Friday. THANK YOU T his endeavour would not have been possible without Director of Creative Arts, Mr Pennay. Not once did he discourage our vision of the week. Without his unfaltering dedication and hard work we would not have been able to achieve Arts Fest 2019 and raise $450 for the Stars Foundation.
