YEAR 8 MATHS TEAM CHALLENGE

CO-CURRICULUM

QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION

A s a group, we had somuch fun at theYear 8MathsTeamChallenge. Not only did it help improve our mathematical understanding, it provided the opportunity to work in teams. We improved our skills in thinking ‘outside of the box’ and had a wonderful time. In the first round, we were given a number of problems to solve. As a team, we divided them and successfully solved all problems. The teams were then split in half and given a series of questions. We enjoyed this round the most because not only was it entertaining and fun but extremely exciting under the time constraints. Trish Chow (8H) and Tung-Hi Ma (8H)

OF MATHEMATICS TEACHERS (QAMT) PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITION

O n Saturday 16 March, Girls Grammar students attended the QAMT Problem Solving competition held at The University of Queensland. This competition is open to all Queensland secondary school students. The BGGS team comprised Year 8 to 12 students who individually completed a series of complex problem- solving maths questions. There were three different categories: Year 7 and 8, Year 9 and 10 and Year 11 and 12. The questions required the application of our previous knowledge and clear working on paper to show our thought processes. Some questions involved the use of theories and geometric equations such as Pythagoras' Theorem and areas of shapes. All of these questions were both challenging and enjoyable. Many thanks to Mrs Mazzaglia and Dr Jenkins for organising the day. Natasha Miric (8O) and Grace Paschkewitz (8O)
