SECOND CHANCE COMMITTEE

Domestic violence and mental health issues are the leading causes for women experiencing homelessness in South East Queensland. Second Chance is a non-for-profit organisation, which raises funds and awareness to provide support for these women and their families. Brisbane Girls Grammar School Second Chance Committee holds weekly meetings and bi-monthly fundraising events. This year, thanks to the passionate contribution from the senior students and supporting staff, we held many successful events, including an International Women’s Day sausage sizzle, hot chocolate stalls, Homeless Connect toiletries drive and the annual Christmas Giving Tree. The money raised from these events was used to purchase essential items such as food vouchers and kitchen appliances that were donated to Zig Zag and Second Chance. The committee was honoured to host guest speakers from these organisations, Ms Kathleen Noonan and Mrs Marjorie Morton from Second Chance, and Ms Vickie Newland and Ms Ritu Shrestha from Zig Zag. Their presentations gave confronting but insightful knowledge into homelessness and domestic violence and inspired the committee to continue raising funds and awareness for both organisations and their causes. Thank you to everyone who supported the Second Chance Committee’s initiatives this year, with special mention to Ms Coughlan for her guidance.
