2016 School Magazine
TENNIS 2016 was another successful year for BGGS Tennis. This year, we had a total of nine teams, each filled with enthusiastic and determined tennis players. It was wonderful to see so many Year 7 players join the sport! These teams trained conscientiously throughout Terms II and III in preparation for the QGSSSA competition which began in Term III. Each team produced commendable results, with five teams finishing in podium positions. A special mention must go to the Junior C team who were undefeated throughout the competition and the Senior B team who also brought home a premiership. I would like to take this opportunity to thank School Principal, Ms Euler our Coordinator, Ms McCorley and lastly my parents, Amanda and Greg Watts for their ongoing support and contribution to the sport. Thanks must also be extended to our amazing team of coaches: our Head Coach, Rob Smeets, Dr Peter Jenkins (Director of Mathematics), Harry Lee, and Old Girls: Shona Millman (1999), Tessa Millman (2003), Bronte Millman (2010), Ruby Graham (2012), Sarah Ridgway-Cross (2014) and Isabella Franks (2015). We welcome new girls to the team each year to join us in playing such a great game. Next year is sure to be as amazing as 2016! TOUCH FOOTBALL The 2016 Touch Season at BGGS was filled with many highs, wins and amazing displays of teamwork, athleticism and #blunity. Our job as Captains was to support the girls and encourage them to be the best they could be and work as team to achieve their very best. After seeing the amazing efforts of the squad this year, we can definitely say that we are incredibly proud of every girl that showed up to training every Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon at Rangakarra with so much energy and enthusiasm to learn and play with their fellow team members. The squad was 172-girls strong, one of the largest the sport has ever seen. Every girl’s passion and love of the game was strong and infectious, encouraging everyone around them and resulting in a fun-filled, successful season. The Friday afternoon fixtures were always a highlight as the excitement could be felt all across the fields. Our first game of the season, a home game against Moreton Bay College, was especially memorable. Watching the year 7s play their very first game of Touch in the royal blue was extremely heart-warming as they wore their uniform with pride as they represented their School. Each girl demonstrated amazing sportsmanship and integrity when playing the game, thus allowing them to gain these important life skills for on and off the field. After our last game against Ipswich Girls Grammar School, the 9B and 7B touch teams were awarded with premierships for their efforts in going through the season undefeated. Amazingly, the total squad of 172 dedicated touch players won 58 games collectively, this is an incredible accomplishment and the girls should be extremely proud of themselves and their team. Particular mention must go to the Metropolitan North representatives, Kate Morrison (Opens), Anabel Ferguson (Under 12s), Polly Lawrence (Under 12s) and Caitlin Brittain (Under 12s). This is an amazing achievement, which highlights their skill and commitment to the game, so congratulations to all of them. We would like to thank all of the people involved in the 2016 touch season, who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the sport and each individual team. The season would not have been possible without the unweaving support of our Coordinator, Mr McGarry, who was always organised, enthusiastic and ready to help. Additionally, the season would not have been as successful without the help and assistance of our Team Manager, Mrs Bailey (nee Ulhmann). Finally, a massive thank you must be extended to the coaches of each team, who put in endless hours to help the squad improve and enjoy the 2016 touch season. We could not have asked for a better team to lead this year and are so happy to have had the opportunity to share our ‘love the Touch’ with the younger grades. It has been a fantastic experience, which has taught us so much. We Will Be Untouchable! HARRIET KING (12E) AND LAUREN VASEY (12L) CAPTAINS OLIVIA WATTS (12O) CAPTAIN
