2016 School Magazine
FOOTBALL The 2016 Football season saw BGGS break new ground. This year we formed five QGSSSA teams and a Junior Development Squad, the most teams BGGS has ever seen. These included a Junior A team and a Junior Development Squad, an Intermediate A and an Intermediate B team, one Senior team and an Open team. Each team trained with passion and enthusiasm and learned and improved every week. This determination paid off in this season’s results: Junior A placed fourth, Intermediate B placed ninth, the Intermediate A were joint premiers, the Senior team placed sixth and the Opens placed seventh. The players were very proud of their results and proud to be a part of one of the fastest growing sports in the world. On a personal level the 2016 Football season was about setting goals, no matter how big or small and striving to achieve them. One of the junior players commented during the season that she felt proud of her team for being able to re-gather and re-motivate themselves after a tough defeat. That is an achievement. For the Senior and Open players the 2016 season was about playing well together and for some, enjoying their final season with BGGS. I would like to the girls for making this an amazing season of Girls Grammar Football, our outstanding coaches and our Coordinator, Mr Laur, who has constantly supported me throughout the season. I had a fantastic last Football season at BGGS and I look forward to seeing the sport continue to grow.
HOCKEY The 2016 season of BGGS hockey was particularly significant with the largest cohort of Hockey players Girls Grammar has ever had. We had 100 players, 22 of which were Year 12s, many who tried hockey for the first time. This season there were seven BGGS teams and for the first time ever there were two BGGS Open teams. The girls took inspiration from the 2016 Olympics and excelled in their performances this year. With such depth in the squad, the season culminated in many successes across the board. The Junior B Blue are to be congratulated on an undefeated season finished in first place. The Junior A team were unlucky to lose one game but still finished in a commendable second place. The Open Blue finished in third place, the Junior B White in fourth place, the Senior A Blue in fifth place, the Open White in eighth place and the Senior A white in tenth place. Overall, this was an outstanding achievement considering the high standard of the QGSSSA competition. Our Head Coach and Coordinator, Angie Lambert OAM played an integral role in the success of this season. We are so fortunate to have such a kind, dedicated and inspirational Head Coach and Coordinator. Congratulations to Charlotte Mitchell (10 L) who was awarded the Friends of Grammar Hockey Encouragement award to recognise her display of spirit, commitment and determination during the season. Congratulations must also go to all the girls who have represented the School at a regional, state, national and international level. Overall, Girls Grammar had a very successful and enjoyable season. It has been a pleasure to captain the squad throughout the year and experience the improvements made by each individual player. We have embraced every moment of this season and are so proud of the girls’ achievements, making our last year of Girls Grammar Hockey so memorable. EMMA BILLS (12W) AND GENEVIEVE WEST (12H) CAPTAINS
