2016 School Magazine
BASKETBALL The 2016 QGSSSA Basketball season was filled with teamwork, passion and an abundance of laughs. Each Friday night of Term II, our eleven teams stood their ground ensuring every game was played to the best of their ability. All teams displayed commitment, confidence and determination throughout the season. The 7B team in particular are to be congratulated for winning the premiership after a fantastic season, finishing undefeated. Our overall success, with most teams placing within the top five, is a representation of their hard work throughout the season specifically when faced with tough competition. This year we were very excited to return to home ground on our pristine, newly renovated court, after a season of all away games. The #blunity shown at each and every game was incredible! This really encouraged all players through the hardest of games. This season would not be possible without the tireless work of our dedicated coaches and our wonderful Coordinator, Mr Fogarty. His love for the sport is evident in the way in which each Friday afternoon of basketball runs smoothly. It has been an honour to captain such an enthusiastic team of basketball players this season, and we look forward to seeing the sport we love, continue to grow.
CRICKET
The 2016 cricket season was a special one for Girls Grammar in many ways. We started off the season with the most number of players ever, and a large group of Year 7s keen to join the squad. Every cricket team is open to all ages, and as a result the Year 7 girls got the opportunity to play with and against older girls. This is a fantastic way to learn the game, and mature as young women as they play alongside exceptional role models in the senior Grammar girls. A special group of Year 12 cricketers came to the end of their Girls Grammar cricketing career this year. This group includes myself and my two close friends, Anna Whip and Sarah Miller. We became a part of the Open Cricket Team when we were just starting at Girls Grammar in Year 8, and remained as constant members of this team until our final day. We started out learning from the outstanding role models of the Year 12 girls at the time, and now after five wonderful years of growing together and supporting each other we have achieved becoming these exceptional role models that the younger girls learn from. All the cumulative experience was a contributing factor to the Open Team’s complete domination of the QGSSSA competition. This cycle of learning from role models to then becoming the role models yourselves will continue next year, and with a strong group of Year 7 girls and the constant increase in participation, I see a bright future for Girls Grammar Cricket.
