ART WALK REPORT BGGS Art Walks are held once a term on a Saturday morning, meeting to encounter particular exhibitions, often at the Gallery of Modern Art or the Queensland Art Gallery. Prepared talks by BGGS staff provide context for deeper understanding of art works in an informal setting. Students, staff, family and the extended Girls Grammar community are most welcome to attend. Walks are advertised in the BGGS News. This year, our first walk was held in February with a tour of specific contemporary works by international artists of the Asia-Pacific region in the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art held at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). In June we returned to QAGOMA with a guided tour of the Cindy Sherman exhibition. Cindy Sherman is renowned for establishing photography as one of the most important contemporary art forms. She is also famous for the manner in which she has used her own image over decades to produce a range of interesting character studies. In August, we met again at QAGOMA with a tour of a wide range of works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, including the Sally Gabori Retrospective as well as paintings and sculptures from the indigenous art collection featured in the 2016 Line and Form exhibition.

We look forward to providing future opportunities for enriched art appreciation to the Girls Grammar Community.

ART WORKSHOPS

The Brisbane Girls Grammar School Art Workshops give students an opportunity each year to do art activities for pleasure and fun. The workshops are conducted by the staff of the Art Department and guest tutors after school once or twice each term. All students, whether they study art or not, are welcome to attend. Our Term I workshop this year introduced students to Felt Making. Felt faces, scarves and small bags were created using brightly coloured felt and rather sticky glue. The traditional process involved the rolling of strips of fibre inside plastic in order to create felt. Term II brought a guest tutor, Ms Loye from the Technology Faculty, into the Art Department. Girls experimented with light painting and a variety of magical digital photography techniques to produce creative and somewhat eerie photographs. The last workshop of the year was led by Ms Lily Allen (12H) and Mr Pincott. This special workshop introduced girls to the skill of drawing animals on paper with demonstrations by Lily in the workshop. The Art Workshops are well attended and enjoyed by many students who enjoy making art in a pleasant and non- competitive environment with other students of the School.
