2016 School Magazine
ANIME 2016 has been another fun-filled year for Anime Club – a cultural club open to all year levels. We meet every Wednesday lunch in the Studio to watch our favourite anime series and films. The Studio is the perfect venue for our club as we can sit down in comfort, eat our lunch and dim the lights, creating our own private cinema. Anime titles viewed by the club this year include: Ouran High School Host Club, Assassination Classroom, Noragami, Wolf Children and Natsume Yuujinchou. Not only do we love watching and talking about anime; another passion of ours is dressing up as our favourite characters. This year’s Cosplay photo-shoot, hosted by the School’s Digital Photography Club, was another great success and we are very proud of these images. The 2016 Anime Club Captain, Elisabeth Chua (10M), has been a fun and energetic leader of the group and has found the experience very rewarding. Like all our members, Elisabeth looks forward to meeting each Wednesday as it is a time to relax with friends and like-minded peers. She has effectively led the group through discussions and voting on what we will watch, as well as organising the Open Day stall and Cosplay Photoshoot. • The club is a welcome retreat from the seriousness of learning and allows me to relax and have fun. Jess, Year10 • I love Anime because it is somewhere we can bond over the same topics and be ourselves. Lauren, Year 10 • My favourite activities have been the Cosplay Photoshoot and running the Open Day stall. Larrisa, Year 11 • I think Ouran High School Host Club was the best anime we watched this year because it is so sweet and funny. Kristie, Year 10 • Talking about and voting on which Anime to watch next is so much fun! Mia, Year 7 • I grew up watching Anime; it makes me feel happy and nostalgic. Larrisa, Year 11 • The thing I appreciate about Anime Club is that each meeting is always different, exciting and full of energy. Lauren, Year 10 Here are some of the member’s thoughts on Anime Club: • This club gives me a place to watch Anime at school with permission! And with my friends. Mia, Year 7
ATHENE The Athene Club, which is made up of Year 11 and 12 students from Brisbane Grammar School and Girls Grammar, convenes every few weeks to discuss a topical issue which is presented in a paper by a senior student. At each meeting, two or three Year 12 Athenians deliver papers of between five and ten minutes, which are followed by about half an hour of edifying and good natured discussion by the whole group. This year, senior girls have presented on topics such as the separation of church and state, the legalisation of medical marijuana, breastfeeding, feminism and organ donation. Overall, this year’s meetings have been fun, engaging and undoubtedly rewarding for all of the girls who have participated. Getting to share our own ideas and listen to those of our fellow Athenians has been a privilege.

APOLLO
Apollo has afforded the chance to twelve Year 12 Girls Grammar students to read challenging texts and discuss and defend their opinions with one another and a group of Year 12 boys from Brisbane Grammar School. This year we discussed a wide range of texts. The first, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, stimulated a range of opinions and it was interesting to hear that a book that won the Pulitzer Prize was not always praised by all readers. It was described as a ‘beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II’. While some of the Apollo members could appreciate aspects of the text, it was not universally well received. However, the discussion itself was stimulating and thought-provoking. In Term IV we read a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bernice bobs her hair , and a short text from TimWinton’s latest publication, The boy behind the curtain . It was fascinating to discuss two quite different texts in the one meeting and have to consider such a range of ideas.
