2016 School Magazine

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY Year 11 Geography covers a diverse range of interesting topics studied throughout the year, including an excursion to Marrapatta and surrounding farms within the Yabba Creek Catchment. On the 17 to 18 February in Term I, twenty four Year 11 Geography students travelled up to Marrapatta Memorial Outdoor Education Centre to embark on an adventure to collate studies collected at numerous places including Yabba Creek, a dairy farm, a hydroponics farm, an avocado and passion fruit farm, a ginger farm, the nearby deer park and Borumba Dam. By visiting each of these places the Year 11 Geography cohort were able to learn about sustainable farming methods and the dependence the Mary River Catchment has upon Yabba Creek. The students were also faced with a challenge by using special equipment that had never been used before by students, to collect water samples at five different crossings along Yabba Creek to test the health and other elements of the water. I know I can say on behalf of the Year 11 Geography cohort for 2016, that the excursion was very educational, enjoyable and an amazing experience to have been involved in.

YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY

This year the Year 12 Geography students have had the opportunity to explore our environment. Field trips to Windsor and Boondall Wetlands enabled us to experience the practical aspects of theory studied in the classroom. Exploration of the principles of urban planning and sustaining communities proved to be very relevant in light of the growth of Brisbane and South East Queensland. We also discovered the powers of digital technologies in connecting people, not just through social networking. Our studies of digital technologies enabled us to further understand the global improvements that can be achieved through technologies such as better access to clean water and easier delivery of health services and education in less developed nations.
