LATIN When I found out I was going to learn Latin at Girls Grammar, I wondered why they were going teach us a dead language? However as the year has progressed I have begun to quite enjoy Latin as it is very easy to learn because it forms the roots of our own language, English. So far this year I have learned four languages with Latin being by far the quickest and easiest to learn. In most of our classes we play games like rapid response, which we all seem to get excited about, especially when the prize is a lolly. We also learn new things like different word groups for both nouns and verbs. Sounds fun right? Well it is! JAIME CLARKE (7G)
Learning Latin in Year 8 has been very beneficial to my understanding of the language and the culture it comes from. We have covered a wide selection of vocabulary and sentence structure to help us be able to read and write the language. It is quite different learning a language that is not spoken anymore and that is what makes it exciting! It is interesting learning about words that are used in many modern languages that are derived from Latin. We have also looked at Roman culture and history in books and videos which is what I enjoy the most about the subject. SOFIAH BEACH (8B)
FRENCH YEAR 11 MADELEINE GOSS (11H)

So far this year, we have studied French society, tourism and art and the language that goes with it. First, we studied French society, focusing on young people and their issues. In Term II, we studied tourism, which culminated in cooking a banquet - rougaille saucisse from a French recipe – which we ate together in the CLC. We also had a visit from our sister school in Angoulême, with whom we sat and practised our French and their (markedly better) English. By Term III, we were exploring French culture through a film set on Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Fauteuils d’orchestre. This unit combined our usual language learning with knowledge about theatre, film, music and fashion. As well as improving our vocabulary and usage, Year 11 French has expanded our knowledge and understanding of France more broadly, and given us a fantastic base and context for our language learning.
