STUDY BUDDIES ELLA CHAPMAN (11M)

The Study Buddy Programme at Girls Grammar allows girls from Years 7 and 8 to receive help and guidance from Year 11 and 12 students. Students are paired with a senior girl to assist them with things like homework, time management and study skills and to help them adjust in the transition from primary school to high school. The girls organise times to meet up regularly, often being a morning, lunchtime or afternoon once a week. The programme is a great opportunity for them to receive help from students with experience, as well as become familiar with girls from older years. I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Study Buddy programme as it is a very rewarding experience to be both a mentor, and familiar face, around school for the new girls.

TIME FOR CHANGE BREANNAH COCHRANE (11L)

In its inaugural year, Time for Change has introduced students to a different way of approaching the School’s service programme. Personal time management and interest in technology are used to allow students to become involved at their own pace and in their own time. Each term offers an online activity, one-day programme or long-term project that students can participate in with the charity changing from term to term. 2015 projects have included the RSPCA Million Paws Walk, an Animal Welfare League Donation Drive where more than forty towels were collected as well as Operation Christmas Child where twenty shoe boxes were uniquely made for Christmas presents for children in need. Our aim was to let each student personalise how they contribute to BGGS Service with the objective being to acknowledge that their individual contribution may be small, but together the contribution will be significant.

INTERACT RYLIE COOKE (11W)

Interact, by definition, means to act in such a way as to have an effect on each other. This year the members of Interact joined together to tackle issues in our surrounding community. Our main focus was an organisation called Days for Girls. Their vision is to provide every girl and woman with access to quality, sustainable hygiene and health education by 2022. Days for Girls directly distributes hygiene kits, raises awareness and helps communities build their own programmes to tackle these issues. Given the opportunities and privileges we sometimes take for granted, it was difficult for the members of the Interact club to imagine life without these simple things. At the Interact service stall on Open Day we raised money for this charitable organisation and are proud of the efforts of our collective team. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that too often girls our age are in situations that put their personal health at risk. We believe that through our fundraising we were able to remind other girls of how privileged they are and how important it is to give back to the people who need it most.
