HUMANITIES

YEAR 8 HUMANITIES ALEXANDRA NASH (8R) In Term II, Year 8 studied a geography unit, which focussed on rainforests. It was alarming to learn the scale of devastation that is occurring in the world’s oldest and most important landscapes in the world and how many threatened species there are as a result. To be able to see the animals in person through the GECKOES Wildlife Experience really made me understand how destructive deforestation is and how saving our rainforests is really important for our future.

YEAR 7 HUMANITIES

ELLA HENDERSON (7W) Each term in Humanities covers a history or geography topic. During the year we prepared an artefact report on an historical structure from the ancient world, examined how water is used in the world and looked at the liveability of our suburb. For the suburb where we each live, we designed a website for young people, examining different areas of the suburb. We assessed what these areas offer to young people and gave suggestions on how the suburb could be improved. In the last term, we studied the evolution of mankind and discussed how being an historian was just like being a detective. We had to look at the evidence and discuss what it proved. My favourite part was designing the website because we were free to design it as we wanted with our own choice of style. I found humanities very interesting and lots of fun.

ECOMAN JACQUELINE BARTON (11E), STEPHANIE OLIN (11M), ELOISE OWENS (11O) AND GRACE REINHOLD (11L) Thanks to the initiative of Queensland Private Enterprise Centre and generous Australian business sponsors, Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School were able to participate in the annual ECOMAN programme that has been successfully running now for more than fifteen years. The event was held at the offices of Corrs Cambers Westgarth on the Brisbane waterfront. The programme succeeds in promoting a better understanding between business theory and business realities — or joining the dots between the whiteboard and the corporate board. ECOMAN is a hands-on, realistic learning tool to introduce economics students to the world of business, teamwork, problem solving, creativity and innovation. The three-day course involved the participation of twenty economics students — ten from both schools. This was an excellent learning opportunity for participants to gain an insight into career opportunities in the fascinating world of private enterprise. In teams, students were assigned unique roles responsible

for management, finance, marketing, sales and production. Each business teams’ aim was to develop their manufacturing company, simulating four years of development and growth to achieve the highest profit over the three days to win. With the help of practiced mentors, ECOMAN was an engaging and rewarding experience for economics students outside the classroom.
