SWIMMING JOANNA KAY (12R) AND JENNA LAWLOR (12B), CAPTAINS
The 2014 swimming season was one of new beginnings. This year we welcomed six new coaches, including Head Coach Mr Damien Jones and both of the 2013 Swimming Captains, Emily Poole and Charlotte Lovejoy. Our competitive season kicked off in late January at the annual Swimming Camp where the swimmers, particularly the Year 8s, were able to make new friends, meet the new coaches and get a feel for the water again. They were also lucky enough to have nutritionist Sally Garrard and Olympic gold medallist Cate Campbell talk to them. Campbell taught the swimmers about the importance of persevering and committing to training. This tied in with the motto for the season ‘Just Keep Swimming’, which was created to motivate girls to continue to train.
All of the preparation paid off at QGSSSA with Girls Grammar placing sixth. There were some outstanding individual performances on the night including: ■ 13 Years Medley Relay: Eliza King (8E), Catherine McLeod (8E), Emma Stacey (8L) and Annabel Ryan (8E) — 1st place in a new QGSSSA record time ■ Minna Atherton (9B) — 1st place in new QGSSSA record time in 14 Years 50m Backstroke; 1st place in Open 100m Backstroke; 1st place in 14 Years 50m Freestyle Div A ■ Eliza King (8E) — 1st place and new QGSSSA record in 13 Years & Under 100m Freestyle As captains we have thoroughly enjoyed our final season as Girls Grammar swimmers. As we depart BGGS it is with excitement we note that with the introduction of Year 7 in 2015, the strength of the top-performing 13 Years & Under Age Group and the new body of coaches, the BGGS Swimming programme has a very promising future. ■ Our Junior B and Junior C teams also placed a well-deserved first, and our Junior As came a very close second. The Senior A team finished third, and both the Senior B and Senior C teams finished fifth. All players are to be congratulated for these outstanding results. Many thanks must go to our coordinator Dr Jenkins, and our amazing team of coaches: Rob Smeets (Head Coach), and old girls Ruby Graham (2012), Jordan Hondow (2012), Sophie Kenny (2011), Bronte Millman (2010), Shona Millman (1999), Tessa Millman (2003), Melissa Myrteza (2013) and Rachael Williams (2013). We welcome new girls to the team each year to join us in playing such a great game. Next year is sure to be as amazing as 2014! ■
TENNIS SARAH RIDGWAY-CROSS (12M), CAPTAIN The 2014 tennis season has been one to remember for all players. Each team was incredibly successful, showing great enthusiasm and dedication to the sport. As their captain, I feel honoured to have represented the girls and seen them all unite; the team spirit this year has been fantastic.
One of the season’s major successes was from our Open team, consisting of Isabella Franks (11B), Katia Peden (11R), Hannah Compton (11R), Josephine Dooley (9G) and Sally Clark (10G) who won the premiership for the first time since 2010.
