ROWING CAITLIN HOCKINGS (12W) AND JOSEPHINE THEILE (12G), CAPTAINS
and ‘emptying the tank’ at each Regatta. And the Opens, who filled a Senior IV, 3rd VIII, 2nd VIII and 1st VIII, were unbelievable. At the Head of the River — our biggest race of the season — 142 girls competed and twenty-six of the thirty-two crews made the A finals. Seven of those crews went on to enjoy a podium finish. Josie Theile convincingly won the Open Schoolgirl single scull and the Senior IV were faultless from start to finish, winning with clear water. The 1st VIII this year coached by Ned Draydon were pushed harder than ever before, achieving third place — one of only four podium finishes for a Girls Grammar 1st VIII in history. To have this level of success has made this season unforgettable. Rowing is an incredible sport like no other. Competitors have their back to the finish line and look outwards to how far they have rowed; one has to become comfortable with discomfort, cultivate the difficult and embrace failure. It has been a wonderful experience for us and we hope this season all rowers have been able to further their passion. ■
This season we set all the rowers a challenge: to give it their all, to finish the season with no regrets, and for each rower to ‘drop the hammer’ on Head of the River day — requiring not only picking up the pace at the end of the race, but also dedication, determination, crew bonds and trust, a competitive drive and passion. Every crew showed these qualities this season and we are very proud of them all. All fifty Year 8s started out not knowing how to row and went on to achieve a podium finish at nearly every regatta. The Year 9s found the ‘Grammar Bond’ and trusted in one another. The Year 10s adapted well to being early risers
SOFTBALL HANNAH HASSUM (12E), CAPTAIN
The 2013-2014 softball season at Brisbane Girls Grammar School had our grammar ‘glovenation’ excel to new heights; everyone should be congratulated on their efforts over the past year. The junior teams finished an incredible season with five out of seven teams placing first or second in their competitions. The 9As remained undefeated for the entire season and the 9Bs took out the premiership in their social competition. With equally commendable results, the 10As and 10Bs ended their seasons on a close second. Our 2014 senior softball season was one of the best seasons Girls Grammar softball has had for years with both teams taking out dual premierships for the first time since 2003. The Opens scored a total of 104 runs with only eighteen runs scored against them. The Opens pitcher Phoebe Collins (11G) totalled seventy-three strikeouts this year, and only fifteen safe hits against her. The Senior As secured the pennant for BGGS for the second year in a row. This season we were lucky enough to have current Head Coach of the Queensland Women’s Heat Softball Team Mr Fabian Barlow as our Head Coach. The Senior A team also had the amazing opportunity to have Australian Softball
representative Melinda Weaver as their Head Coach. We would like to thank all of the coaches for their hard work and dedication. Mrs Harvey-Short and Mrs Cooke were scorers for the senior teams. Special thanks to Mrs Cooke who has been scoring for BGGS softball for more than 40 years! The devotion of the girls, coaches, scorers, supporters and our softball coordinator, Mr Woods, enabled us to achieve these amazing results this season. ■
