FOOTBALL GABRIELLE BENNETT (12W) AND OLIVIA RONEY (12W), CAPTAINS
HOCKEY ELIZA FAIRBAIRN (12H) AND KATHERINE MCCREADY (12E), CAPTAINS This year signified a milestone for Girls Grammar hockey as the 2014 teams showcased the amazing new fields at Fig Tree Pocket to nine other QGSSSA schools. These fields, along with the constant support and encouragement from coaches and parents, enabled our girls to win three out of the four premierships (the Senior A, Junior A and Junior B teams); an outstanding achievement. We were also the only school to enter five teams into the competition. This success would not have been possible without the constant advice and amazing tutoring from Mrs Lambert, who was not only teaching us but also constantly running circles around us with her well-polished skills. As an ex-Hockeyroo, she helped us gain valuable skills, truly went above and beyond and was there to see all girls improve tremendously throughout the season. Congratulations to Sarah-Jane McCann (10L) for winning the QGSSSA Hockey Encouragement Award, an award acknowledging an individual’s potential to develop as a hockey player, as well as her outstanding dedication and commitment to the sport. Congratulations also to Emma Bills (10W), Sarah-Jane McCann (10L), Elizabeth Perrin (10H) and Lillian Kessling (11L) for competing in the Met- North Hockey competition and to Emma Bills and Sarah- Jane McCann who made the Brisbane Under 18 team and Queensland Under 15 team repectively. A big thank you must go to all coaches and Ms Northcroft for their constant advice and mentoring. It has been a pleasure to captain in our memorable last year of Girls Grammar hockey. ■
Brisbane Girls Grammar Football entered a new and exciting epoch in 2014. New and fully-equipped training fields at our Fig Tree Pocket Sports Campus; a new coordinator, Mrs Cross; a new Junior Development Team; a new summer camp; and new uniforms to top it all off. What an impact all of these factors have had!
In the QGSSSA competition the Junior Team achieved a hard-fought sixth place overall, the Senior Team obtained an unprecedented second, and the Open Team earned a record-breaking and pocket-earning third place. A stand-out game of the season was against Somerville House, where the Opens came from 2-0 behind in the second half to win 3-2 showing high resilience and grit from all players. These achievements, that we should all be so proud of, are also our way of saying thank you to our coaches, Mr Sebastian Monteverde, Miss Sophie Dreves, Miss Alexandra ‘Stormy’ Scarlett and Miss Nicola Gow, and our coordinator, Mrs Cross. This year we also welcomed back Elise Kellond- Knight — one of Brisbane Roar’s and the Matildas’ greatest assets — as guest coach-in-residence. Elise coached at the inaugural BGGS Football Camp in January and brought along two of her Brisbane Roar teammates, defender Laura Alleway and striker Larissa Crummer. Their knowledge and experience of the game was invaluable, working one-one-one and offering the squads their expert guidance. The School’s relationship with the Brisbane Roar will be crucial as we welcome the Year 7’s next year, and establish an additional team in the QGSSSA competition. ■
