CROSS COUNTRY SCOUT COOKE (12O) AND REBECCA GARDENER (12L), CAPTAINS On 17 May, 120 Girls Grammar Cross Country squad members competed against nine other QGSSSA schools over a three- kilometre course.

FENCING CERI ATHERTON (12L) AND BETHANY STOKE (12B), CAPTAINS Fencing has had an amazing year. Everyone has given their all and come out with a victory, whether it is mastering a new move, or winning a national championship. As captains, it has been an honour to work with everyone this year. The year started with a huge group of keen new fencers, and others coming back to learn more. We had several victories in the first term in the Individual Schools Championships and at the State School Teams Championships with teams taking first place in foil, sabre and epee. Term II had us competing against Moreton Bay College, All Hallows, other Girls Grammar teams and Brisbane Grammar School. Spirit was high and fencers improved with every match. The amount of team support was commendable. It has been a pleasure to see every fencer having a great time and getting some impressive results with many teams coming first and second, earning Girls Grammar a well- earned second place overall in the interschool fencing competition. In the National School Teams Championships, Girls Grammar had an impressive victory! Our team came first in foil for the fifth consecutive year, first in sabre for the fourth consecutive year and second in epee. This is a record- breaking result, setting the standard higher than ever before. These competitions show the determination, dedication and domination in fencing this year, and we are so privileged to have been part of this experience. We wish all our fellow fencers the best of luck for the future. ■

The cheering, encouragement and gutsy performances of the BGGS girls helped us achieve second place, with the 17 years emerging victorious in their age group. As captains, we could not have been happier as this group has won the age pennant every year since Year 8. While our winning streak of twenty years came to an end, we were so proud to see our squad accept second place so graciously, showing our great sportsmanship as true Grammar girls. There is no doubt that going for the twenty-first QGSSSA win was fun, and we would like to thank every girl who trained in the early hours of the morning, who braved nerves and stress at every meet and who pushed themselves on the day. We couldn’t have done it without the tremendous support from the School community, and would like to thank our coaches, Head Coach Mr Pearce, Ms Palmer and old girls Bethany Holt, Lauren Mewing, and Emily Perrin. Special mention to our wonderful coordinator Mrs McCarthy for all the effort she put into organising such a huge season. We would also like to thank all the girls who donated their second-hand cross country shoes at the end of the season. We collected eighteen pairs which have been passed on to those less fortunate. Remember girls: 20 was plenty, and because everyone knows that Grammar girls are born to run, just for fun... Let’s start from one. ■
