of rain We remained optimistic and determined. Each participant walked around thirty kilometres on the trip. carrying everything she needed on her back. in true Brisbane GIFts Grammar School spirit. we refused to let the rain daunt us. kept calm and carried on. Consequently, we really embraced the beautiful natural environment of Fraser Island and we really enjoyed the trip. and the Incredible sense of achievement at its conclusion CHLOE YEAR 111Bj DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD PROGRAMME STUDENT LEADER The commitment and dedication required to complete anyAward level 15 significant. but the rewards are well-worth the effort Congratulations go to the following girls who have achieved Awards this year

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award 15 an International programme which alms to encourage initiative. resilience. and an adventurous spirit in Its participants There are four components to the award - skill. physical recreation. community service. and adventu rous journeys. all of which are predominantty student-driven The Award scheme allows participants to achieve at Bronze. Silver or Gold levels Each Award level requires girls to complete sections in Service. Skills. Physicat Recreation and Adventurous Journeys The time requirements associated with each section Increase with each Award Level. Students are encouraged to choose activities that will extend and challenge them The Service section of the Award requires girls to make a regutar commitment to a Community Service Provider. This section helps girls to develop a wider awareness of their community and to understand their responsibility to others it has ctear links with the Schools YearlO Service Programme The Skills Section often extends students' existing participation in Co- curricular activities at School such as Music. Drama and Dance. 51mitarty. the Physical Recreation section requires girls to challenge themselves in their chosen sporting activity The Adventurous Journey section encourages girls to move outside their comfort zones and embrace the unknown in a spirit of adventure At BGGS we offer two Adventurous Journey Expeditions per year involving extended overnight bushwatks in chattenging environments. This year. girls completed School Expeditions to GIFraween National Park and Fraser island National Park On FFaser Island. my group was driven via 4WD 'taxi' along a pure white sandy road. With much excitement and joking reluctance. we were dropped off among ancient. towering rainforest. Not long afterwards Iwith the taxi now far awayl we were greeted by hordes of bloodthirsty leeches. a ridiculously large earthworm and plenty
