Historg in Year 10 In line with the new national curriculum requirements, the Year 10 History programme underwent significant changes this year. in Term I, students studied World War I. Students commented on their surprise at how much Australia was caught up in this international conflict, and the details of action on the Western Front and at Gallipoli Term 11 explored important historical events which helped shape Australia, and Terms 111 and N focused on Rights and Freedoms A specific focus of this unit was a study of indigenous Australians Students in these classes commented that they have come to appreciate that studying the past helps to understand the present and inform the future I Ms I Hennessey, Head of History I
This course of study resonated with most girls, as they felt a personal connection to these soldiers. Many of the stories we heard of parents sending their sons off to the war and not seeing them again evoked many emotions. in particular, the case of Jim Martin, who was only fourteen when he went to war, made us think of the possibility of our brothers and friends heading out to fight. The younger generation must be educated in Aboriginal history and culture in order to succeed where their predecessors have failed. We must instil a deep understanding and appreciation of the Aboriginal community in the youth of today for it is them who will have the responsibility of truly righting society's past wrongs. 01.1VIA FURSl. \' (IOH) Economics in 20n Confucius said he hoped that we lived in "interesting times", and for all of us in Economics, 2011 has been just that. However, it was not until we had begun the unit that I realised, like most of my classmates, how little I knew on the subject. .. economic uncertainty in both Europe and Greece. in Iuly all of Year I I participated In the UQ Student Economics Competition This multiple choice test required students to apply economic theory to hypothetical problems and scenarios and tested their understanding of current affairs. it was an experience that allowed the girls to compare themselves against students from all over Queensland. Many of our girls ear ed Distinctions and High Distinctions in the competition, a fantastic effort
