I Picasso once said, 'Had I been born Chinese, I would have been a calligrapher, not a painter'. Calligraphy Club embraces Japanese culture through the practice of Japan's oldest art form. Established in 2000, this club brings students from Brisbane Girls Grammar and Brisbane Grammar School together every Thursday afternoon to learn the skills involved in Japanese Calligraphy Calligraphy encompasses the intricate use of the brush, where a steady hand and practice can create beautiful artistry. Individually, these characters have their own unique form, but when combined together, they build meaningful proverbs and imagery Kofima Sensei, a ninth dan judge, and his wife, Fumiko Sensei, shared their expertise, enlightening us about the significance of the characters and guiding us through each stroke. In September, Anna Redmond (12G) and Sabrina Lee (12E) helped us hold a calligraphy demonstration for the Year 7 students of Coorparoo State School. This event was initiated by Emilia Lalousis, a future Grammar girl who, after visiting the Calligraphy Display on Open Day, asked us if a demonstration was possible. The Year 7 students were studying China and although Calligraphy Club is based on the Japanese form of the art, it has foundations in China. Overall, he visit was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience; in particular the enthusiasm and commitment of the Year 7 students,

Since 2006 the Anime Club has enjoyed a high level of involvement and enthusiasm from its members and 2008 has been no exception. Anime refers to animation originating from Japan and it covers every jinaginable genre and style. it has become popular all over the world for its flare in both artwork and story lines The Club meets twice a week, drawing together a diverse group of students interested in this unique form of Japanese pop culture. We watch and discuss episodes of anime television series and learn about many other aspects of Japanese culture including art, fashion and music. The Anime Club also spends part of the year preparing for the annual pop-culture expo 'Supanova' which is a very popular event for anime fans. Club members attended the 2008 expo uniquely attired in the costume of their favourite anime character. There is much more to anime-apart from being incredibly interesting and entertaining-it reflects a fascinating youth culture from a foreign country. The Club has experienced a great year and although many Year 12 members are leaving, the enthusiasm of remaining members and the interest generated at the decorative and friendly Open Day stall will ensure the Club continues to g row
