A champion team
Track and field athletes perform in one of the major events in the QGSSSA calendar and the Grammar athletes did themselves and their School proud on Saturday 15 October at the QEII track by achieving our fourth consecutive victory. In a School that encourages its students to learn about themselves by contributing in a variety of ways, it was wonderful to see so many girls representing the School - and running and throwing and jumping. Outstanding individual performances included Bethany Holt (8B) who came first in the 14 years 1500m and 800m and second in the 400m, three of the most grueling races on the track. Georgina Porter (11O) achieved two firsts in the 16 years long jump and 100m and a second in the 400m. Sarah Wilson (10B) ran two strong firsts in the 15 years 100m and 400m. Clare Murray (12M) then highlighted the contribution of the field athletes by winning both the 17 years shot put and discus. A champion team is preferable to a team of champions and, although this is a cliché, it is also true. Grammar led, closely followed by Moreton Bay College, throughout the day. At the start of the ten relay races, Grammar led by only a handful of points. It was then that the impact of the depth and commitment of our athletes showed. Grammar
achieved five seconds and five firsts. It was a breathtaking way to end such a successful day. Brisbane Girls Grammar School won by 25 points. One of the most telling statistics for the carnival was that Girls Grammar placed first, second or third in eighty percent of a total 108 events. This is an exceptional result displaying amazing strength and dedication of a champion team. The age group results also reflect this consistency: 13, 14 and 17 years second; 15 and 16 years first. A successful season
one team, the 10Bs were the undefeated premiers for their division. This team, together with their coach, Mr Bland, should be acknowledged for this wonderful achievement. Grammar basketball players did not only shine in the QGSSSA and BBI competitions this year. Congratulations must go to Open players Jana Drakopoulos (11H) and Rosemary Allen (11W) who were selected to compete as part of the Met North Open team in the State Championships. Jana also captained this team which is a praiseworthy achievement and a testament to her talent and leadership. Particularly gratifying were the improvements to individual skills each player made throughout the season. This desire to achieve personal bests and play with a strong School spirit and enthusiasm have made this season very successful and memorable. Team sport is the perfect way to contribute, get fit, make new friendships and have a lot of fun. Kate Condon (12M) & Alexandra Kidd (12G) CAPTAINS
The 2005 season has been filled with great achievements and strong determination. But it is the fun, energy, enthusiasm and the players’ ability to remain positive in any situation on and off the court that has made this year particularly successful. Grammar basketball players have been not only energetic, but also supportive, inspired and talented. The season goals of fostering teamwork and encouraging all players to improve individual performances over the course of the season were achieved and the Grammar spirit came to the fore with a more competitive approach in all games.
This year nine teams were entered into the QGSSSA competition, and two teams in the Brisbane Basketball Incorporated Club Under 16 and Under 18 competitions. The Under 18 team competed particularly well and took out the championship. This was an amazing achievement against strong opposition. The QGSSSA season results were very pleasing. Two teams obtained third places, two came second and
