The Power of Sport

The most important reason for participating in sport and recreation is that it is fundamentally “fun”. Doing something that is consistently “fun” clearly makes life a more enjoyable experience. It is hardly surprising therefore that so many girls want to play sport. They like the fact that it makes them feel fit, confident and competent; they consider it to be an important, enjoyable part of life; and they see it as a new way to make friends. Captains of Sport

Competing for one another

Competitors were amazed not only by the talent of Brisbane Girls Grammar School gymnasts, but also and more importantly by our sustained spirit. The spirit within our sport reached a pinnacle this year and with four of our coaches being past Gymnastics Captains, it is obvious that this pride in gymnastics can only continue. The talent and courage shown by all gymnasts also made this season one to remember. By the season’s end all gymnasts were interacting and supporting each other regardless of year level and ability. As Captains, we achieved our goal! Emma Capell (12G) & Anna Mullins (12R) CAPTAINS

At the beginning of the year, our team of 55 enthusiastic and energetic gymnasts set out on a quest to prepare mentally and physically for the challenge of the QGSSSA competition on May 10 and 11. While winning and accolades are always gratifying to receive, the real objective of this season was to build a greater sense of team spirit and cohesiveness, especially between the grades. It was important that each team member, whether in E(ii) or the Open grade, believed that her commitment to each other was important in achieving this goal. The early morning trainings proved to be a challenge but, by the time of the competition, the team atmosphere had developed into a powerful unifying force. All team members spent two days eagerly cheering on their fellow gymnasts. This camaraderie and pride inspired each gymnast to perform at her very best. By the last event of the two days, the Open grade competition, the team’s spirit and support were unmatched by any other school.

All Captains of Sport have taken the initiative this year to enhance the spirit in Grammar sport. The introduction of Blue Days encouraged the School to support all competitors in true blue form. This has certainly made a difference to the numbers of spectators at sporting events and the competitors truly appreciated the solidarity, given their commitment to training and their team mates. The successes of 2005 could not have been possible without the assistance of the dedicated sport co- ordinators who spend many hours on top of their From the Captains’ Captains
