Gala Concert

Gala Concert

Postcards are snapshots that freeze people and places in time. They allow us to revisit our experiences or share in other people’s experiences and cultures. This was the theme of our major musical showcase, Postcards , which allowed us to present in Brisbane City Hall a diverse range of repertoire and communicate the importance of travel and understanding of different cultures to the audience. Music from Africa, Serbia, Russia and South America, and pieces commemorating periods in history such as the Korean War were performed, and all musicians could display a variety of new and developed techniques. The Grammar Community Choir, a joint venture with Brisbane Grammar School comprising former students, parents and friends from the community, joined senior ensembles to complete the programme. In addition, the broad array of themes cultivated by the many musical pieces was enhanced by dances, including tap and a traditional Irish jig. All music was accompanied by the projection of photographs of people and places onto giant screens erected on either side of the stage. A highlight of the concert was a series of individual ‘postcards’ of every Year 12 musician to provide memories of their experiences in, and commitment to, the Brisbane Girls Grammar School music programme. Postcards was a memorable Gala Concert, a testament to the extensive work and musical preparation in many weeks of rehearsals, and a wonderful conclusion to five years of Grammar music for the Year 12 students who are ready to embark on their travels beyond Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
