Theatresports

Why one would choose to be on stage with no script is, to many, beyond comprehension. However, Brisbane Girls Grammar School Theatresports team members are all too familiar with the challenge of creating a structured and entertaining scene using minimal stimulus and no preparation. With an increase in training and experience, the Theatresports programme has gained overwhelming support from the School community. In fact, almost one third of the audience at the semi-finals of the Youth Theatresports Festival in 2004 comprised Brisbane Girls Grammar School supporters! During Term II, four students performed in a friendly competition at St Peters Lutheran College as a precursor to the 2005 Youth Theatresports Festival. Despite what appeared to be tough competition, Elizabeth Talbot (12R), Cerys Drennan (12B), Alison Rae (12O) and Sophie Matterson (11O) were awarded third place and ‘Magic Moment’ for one of their scenes involving a telepathic dog named Zeus. Late in Term III our Year 12 Theatresports team progressed to the semi-finals of

the competition. Elizabeth Talbot (12R), Imogen Hayes (12R), Olivia Tunnell (12W), Alison Rae (12O) and Cerys Drennan (12B) were placed second. This is a great achievement particularly as all the girls were in the middle of Senior exams at the time. Theatresports performances are unique. The audience is given a once-in-a-lifetime, never-to- be-repeated show. The humour most often relies on the experience of the moment. There is no doubt that being in a Theatresports team is risky but the satisfaction one feels after a successful performance is unrivalled. Elizabeth Talbot (12R) DRAMA CAPTAIN

The Year 11 International FPS Team of Elizabeth Forrest (11H), Jien-Li Tan (11H), Elizabeth Moule (11H) and Alexandra Price (11H), embarked on a challenging learning curve, trying to absorb the intricacies of Business Crime for the competition at Kentucky University in June where the girls achieved a creditable 12th place out of 79 teams in their division. The team, accompanied by Mrs Stubbington and Mrs Sharma, enjoyed a warm welcome in Lexington, Kentucky and from there, visited New York, taking in as many of the sights and sounds as possible. As an assistant coach this year, I have been constantly impressed by the girls’ incredible imagination, eloquent writing and willingness to learn. I commend all girls on their exceptional performances, and would especially like to congratulate our talented Year 11s on their achievement. Jemima Cowderoy (12E) CAPTAIN

2005 has been an exciting year for the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Future Problem Solving Club (FPS). We began the year with the exciting prospect of sending a Year 11 team to the FPS International Conference in Kentucky, USA and welcomed a new group of creative Years 8s and 9s. Our talented Year 10 teams returned to the challenge and hard work of the process, and with our devoted and invaluable Co-ordinator, Mrs Stubbington, stepping aside from the main coaching position this year to focus on the International team, we have warmly welcomed Mrs Bryant as a new coach and Co-ordinator.
