Drama Club

Health Promoting Schools

Every year when Drama Club begins, there is a soundscape of old members reuniting and new members talking excitedly about their expectations. This year, the soundscape was considerably louder as record numbers of girls signed up for the club that brings lovers of drama together. Eager to meet the enthusiasm of the students, Drama Club went on to create two successful productions in 2005. During first Semester, Drama Club divided into seven fifteen-minute plays, each showcasing a famous villain from western culture for a collage piece entitled, Something Wicked This Way Comes . Students from Years 11 and 12 assumed the roles of directors under the guidance of our Co-ordinator, Mrs Pattemore, while younger participants were given the opportunity to shine in leading roles and develop friendships with other members of the cast. The successful production was enjoyed by large numbers of supportive parents and Grammar girls alike. We are looking forward to the second Semester production of C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe which will be staged under the stars on the Stage Lawn and promises to be a magical performance.

For ten years, the Health Promoting Schools Committee (HPS) has aimed to assist girls to achieve a balance between work and play through nutrition and lifestyle. By participating in various health-related events which raise awareness of issues affecting women and young people, the student committee, under the guidance of the Director of Health, Physical Education and Sport, Ms Johnston, has had a very successful year. Our first fundraising activity, Tatts and Tiaras Day, raised $1050 for the Abused Child Trust. During May, the School continued its annual tradition, actively supporting The Heart Foundation’s Heart Week. The Year 8s enjoyed the company of “Happy Heart” whilst participating in Jump Rope for Heart. Other popular activities included the staff versus student netball game, the Interhouse Beep Test and sessions in aerobics, rockclimbing and weight training. During 2005, HPS has continued its relationship with the catering staff of café@grammar. This has lead to the introduction of the HPS Healthy Option food labeling sticker. HPS has also contributed to a cleaner, safer environment, representing students

in Workplace Health and Safety Meetings and in discussions about litter on the School grounds with the Grammar Environmental and Conservation Organisation (GECO). HPS is a motivated group, striving to have a positive influence on the School community. The success of the committee can be attributed to the ongoing hard work, contributions and enthusiasm of the members, as well as the continual support of Ms Johnston, Sister Hann, Ms Belbin and Mrs Forbes. HPS efforts have played an important role in shaping the lives not just of fellow students, but

Rockclimbing this year has been yet another success. All climbers have achieved new feats of daring, whether it was overcoming their fear of heights, climbing Purvis on naturals, conquering the Sheer Relief and Goose overhangs or finally climbing Catt’s Walk after five years of rockclimbing. Rockclimbing is also a great way to relax after the rigours of school and exams. Contrary to the popular belief that climbing the same wall one hundred times becomes boring, every climb is a new experience. Help and encouragement from old time rockclimbers Miss Jennifer O’Brien (2003) and Miss Dimity Treloar (2001) have also been appreciated. We would especially like to thank Mr Greatorex, the Co-ordinator. Our rockclimbing endeavours would not be possible without him.

choreographing and teaching marvelous dances to all the girls. We also thank Stephanie Early (12L) for her management and organisation skills leading up to the hectic weeks of our concert. Our leadership roles as Theatre Dance Captains have been cherished as every single Theatre Dance girl is a dancing diva and it has been a pleasure to know and dance with them all. So let us always transform the Gehrmann Theatre into a stage spectacle, spotlighting our Theatre Dance Group of talented performers who express themselves through dance. Theatre Dance 2005 has once again recaptured the essence of dance with artistic and theatrical styles. This year’s concert entitled A Night In... had a timeless multicultural theme taking the audience all around the world via the medium of dance. It allowed girls to express themselves culturally through American Bronx hip hop, Indian belly dancing, Chinese lukin dancing, Russian ballet and even Brazilian dancing. The concert was enjoyed by all families, staff and friends whose applause and support were greatly appreciated by the hard- working dancers. Early in the year, a small group of select dancers was given the opportunity to perform once again at the annual Buddha’s Birthday Festival held at Southbank. Although the girls were slightly overwhelmed by the thousands of onlookers who
