Rowers make history

We’ve got rhythm

The 2005 Grammar Rowing season is one that no rower will ever forget and one in which the squad built upon a tradition of excellence. After vigorous and difficult trials in April, tough selection decisions were made. Rowers from Years 9 to 12 then headed off to Maroochydore for a week filled with fun, pain, rain and wind. Not only was it the most successful camp in Grammar history, but it was also the wettest. With howling winds at night and torrential rain during the day, the rowers had to be especially committed to their training regime. The 2005 regatta season started on the first Saturday of Term III. It was a promising start to what would be the most successful season ever achieved by the Grammar Rowing squad. Many wins were recorded by the younger crews. The Opens raced their best regatta season under the watchful eye of Head Coach, Mr Shishkin. Head of the River 2005 made Grammar Rowing history. Our rowers achieved our first set of five wins at a Head: Year 9 First and Fifth Quads, Year 8 First, Third and Fifth Quads. These junior results provide Grammar Rowing with the foundation for future success. Not only this, but these wins have instilled pride and confidence into the Grammar Rowing community.

weather conditions for the ribbon competitors, the team did exceptionally well, being one of the top three scoring teams. The ball and the combination team also placed in the top three, meaning that Grammar also won this division. The Rhythmic Gymnastics team was especially proud of the A

This year Rhythmic Gymnastics adopted the colours hot pink and gold; pink for passion and go for gold! The girls enthusiastically embraced this theme through their approach in training, team spirit and competition. The Year 8s set the standard for the rest of the team, being the first Grammar girls to compete. Excitement, nerves and a little anxiety were experienced by the girls as they prepared. For most of them it was the first time that their hair had ever been so tightly slicked back into a bun and the first occasion to don a shiny blue lycra unitard. However, these competition jitters were overcome and the girls performed wonderfully, definitely standing out with their huge smiles throughout their difficult routines. The three teams finished an impressive second, third and sixth and must be congratulated on their amazing debut performances. After this pleasing display, the B Grade competition followed. The result of this division was calculated by combining the two highest team scores. All teams competed magnificently. However it was the scores of the hoop and the ball teams which enabled

This season, one special rower received the Club Spirit Award. Caitlin McNicol (11L) was one of the most dedicated rowers ever seen in an Open squad. After narrowly missing out on selection in the First and Second Eights, Caitlin became a crucial member of the Open squad by replacing any rower, on any side, at any time. The value of dedicated rowers like this to the success and spirit of the squad cannot be underestimated and she is a role model to squad members. At the Queensland School Championship Regatta, Grammar had even more success: a win to the Year 8 First Quad, a second for the Year 9 First Quad and a fourth to the Year 11 Pair. With rowers like ours and the results achieved in the 2005 rowing season, the future of Grammar Rowing is one continually moving forwards and getting brighter by the year. This group achieved the second highest score of the competition, gaining 15.28 for their beautiful routine. The competition day finished with the Open teams competition. Grammar won the Open Pairs division, scoring the two highest scores of all competitors with the hoop pair and the ball pair. The hoop pair of Amanda Lee See (12L) and Ceit Wilson (11O) received the highest score of the entire competition for their routine (15.63). The ball pair of Johanna Bear (8H) and Zarah Walker (9B) received the third highest score of the competition for their routine (15.20). The Open rope group performed impressively to come a very close second to longstanding rivals in this division, St Peter’s. This season has been very enjoyable and successful.
