Late in 2003. after many hours of training, a number of our top Current Year Twelve students went beyond the classroom to complete the National Qualifying Examinations for the Physics, Chemistry and Biology Olympiads. The standard of the examinations, as usual, was very high. >.-- Emily See 11 ZBj and Alexandra Mereer 11 ZEj went beyond the classroom as they negotiated the gruelling process required to gain selection to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in anuary. The girls write: The National Youth Science Forum in Canberra in January this year was excellent As well as having a blast for two weeks with 2991ike-minded students, our eyes have been opened to an incredible range of opportunities in science, at University and beyond We obtained insight into the challenges and rewards of scientific careers and into the myriad research facilities located in Canberra where we spent most of our days talking to nationallyacclaimed scientists and doing sciencebased activities such as making liquid nitrogen icecream The public speaking Involved in being an 'NYSFer' and the rigorous application process which required us to answer abstract questions such as "How do you weigh an elephant?" were most worthwhile experiences

The Forum is held annually over the June/July holidays and focuses on biomedical engineering. it provides students with a taste of tertiary lecture situations, handson practical experiences and interesting insights into current scientific research and controversial science issues. The girls found it to be an interesting and enjoyable experience
