ACCOUNTING AT BGGS

Accounting at BGGS has offered students some interesting activities in 2003 Year 12 Accounting students enjoyed an excursion to the Accounting Students' Forum at Queensland University of Technology in February. The Forum is an annual event organised jointly by Business Educators' Association of Queensland and aUT. The forum offers accounting students the opportunity to listen to speakers about accounting topics from the current syllabus (eg. Analysis of Financial Reports, GST and Other Business TaxesI and beyond the current syllabus leg. Electronic Business, Investing in Cash, Shares and Property. Decision Making Using Accounting) Insights into careers in Accounting were also provided for those students considering further study in this discipline The aUT in High Schools programme has once again run successfully with Year 12 Accounting students undertaking OUT's first Year Bachelor of Business subject, BSBllO Undertaking subject this req uires determination and good time management throughout the Year, as students juggle their normal timetable, sporting and other co-cu rricular commitments. BSBllO entails completing regular tutorials, an assignment and formal inid and end of semester Involvement in the exa minations programme offers the students a number of opportunities to mix with students in other schools completing the same programme During the Year, the students attended two lectures at OUT with Ms Ros Kent the subject co- ordinator. Ms Kent also visited Brisbane Girls Grammar School and conducted a revision lecture for our students and ten Year 12 gentlemen from St

Joseph's, Gregory Terrace. The favour was returned and our students had the opportunity to attend St Joseph's for a final revision lecture. Congratulations to the following girls who undertook this challenge in 2003: Ebony Berrell, Iennifer Cook, Kimberly Davis, Jacqueline Lee, Kate Makinson, Kathleen MDtt, Kate O'Grady, Bridgette Watson and Rachel Williams. A number of Year 11 and 12 students undertook the Business Educators Association of Queensland Accounting Competition in September. This is a state wide challenge for accounting students Results unavailable at time were of publication Ten Year 11 Accounting students have taken up the challenge in 2003 of participating in a Brisbane Grammar School and Brisbane Girls Grammar School joint project: running a 'virtual business! The fitm, Bluebi7d Freight, is a practice firm that forms part of the network of training businesses run by The Australian Network of Practice Firms. These practice firms are simulated businesses that follow real-world business practices but trade in a virtual economy. Students work as business people in a virtual environment; operating their own business and making decisions that lead the business to profitable 10r not-so-profita ble) outcomes. Shahedah Sabdia, Marina Tsutsumi and Susan Yang The group formed three distinct sub-groups administration IPersonnel, sales and marketing and finance in order to focus their efforts on running the virtual business. Lucy Corke and Carlo Salanitri (Brisbane Grammar School) were appointed as joint Chief Executive Officers of Bluebird Freight and led the group with distinction Mentoring the group were Mr Neil Girdham and Mr Ian Searle from Brisbane Grammar School and Mrs Phillipa Greig from Brisbane Girls Grammar School Mrs P Greig Head of Department
