MATH S IN M OTION An excursion to Dreamworld was planned for the students of Mathematics C in Year 12 on I August 2003. The purpose of the excursion was to gather data using CBL (calculator-based laboratory) vests to measure the acceleration and pressure experienced by students on selected rides. This data was then analysed using graphing calculators and computer software to investigate the relationship between acceleration, velocity and displacement involved in the rides. On their arrival at Dreamworld, the students were introduced to Mr Jim Lowe, the Vice-president of AAMT, who pioneered the use of the CBL vests in Queensland. Some time was spent in the education room learning how to operate the accelerometers and CBL data collectors Students then put aside their fears and headed towards the Giant Drop and Tower of Terror in the cause of collecting real-life data! Both staff and students felt that the experience was worthwhile, highly educational, and a lot of fun! it is hoped that the Dreamworld excursion will form the basis for extending data collection and analysis beyond the classroom a rid into a n interactive a rid tech nology-rich environ merit
