PERFORMANCE

MUSIC The Year began swimmingly with the very successful Senior Music Camp at Watson Park Convention Centre, Dakabin. This provided a great opportunity for the members of the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Vivaldi Players and the Symphonic Winds to get to know each other and build musical cohesion. in between rehearsals. admirable quantities of 1011ies and popcorn were devoured and largely because of enormous talent (but perhaps partially due to the sugar high), all girls proved to be brilliant sight-readers and very fast learners. Parents can vouch for this, as by Sunday the four groups had mastered all their new pieces and provided wonderful concert for all Music a Depa rtment supporters. This Year the Music Department had a raft of concerts that allowed the girls to display their skills and talent to their families and the wider community. The first official concert of the Year was the Welcome to Year Eight Parents Concert, where senior groups gave our newest members of the Grammar community a tantalising taste of what the Department has to offer. The Autumn Concert gave many girls their first opportunity to perform to the wider School community, and all rose to the challenge. it also heralded the beginning of a wonderful tradition in decoration making. Hannah managed to create the word 'Autumn' entirely out of a letter 'U

Ieukaemia research. The groups performed a wide variety of stunning music, making it one of the most beautiful concerts of the Year. Possibly the most exciting and musical Iy extending event of the Year was the Combined Schools Music Festival, jointly hosted by the Brisbane Grammar Schools. Approximately four hundred of the nation's top school-age musicians attended, and worked w'th renowned conductors to present a spectacular concert at the end of the three-day program. The annual Brisbane Girls Grammar SchoollBrisbane Grammar School Intermediate String and Vocal Festival gave many of our girls the opportunity to participate in and enjoy an educational musical experience where all the students had a great time. In retrospect, 2003 has been a busy Year for the Music Department. The dedication of the Music Staff has made it possible for so much to be achieved, and the constant support of Music parents contributed to the spirit of community surrounding Brisbane Girls Grammar School music all year. Many lessons have been learnt, many pieces rehearsed. many items performed, many friendships formed and, of course, much fun was had by all.

template. The following May Concerts featured one evening dedicated to chamber music, and it was great to see this part of the Music Department on show. Following the tradition of excellence in musical performance, the last seasonal concert for the Year, the Spring Concert, was blossoming with talent, blooming with enthusiasm and bursting with zest. As well as these series, there were concerts that showcased specific areas of the Music Department. One such performance was the Bands Concert, which took place on a Sunday afternoon and demonstrated the musical achievements of three out of the four ensembles in the Band Programme. The Annual instrumental and Vocal Competitions once again let all the girls have an opportunity to challenge themselves and receive helpful and sage advice from the accomplished adjudicators. Congratulations to all who took part. Once again it was a great success. in particular, commendation must be extended to Francesca Hiew for her success as a recital ist in the National Youth Concerto Competition. This is a competition of extremely high standard and Francesca's involvement in it reflects her great ability and musicianship. The Cathedral Concert held in St Stephen's Cathedral was a great success and raised over one thousand dollars to go towards
