DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD SCHEME
The Award concept is one of individual challenge. it presents to Young people a balanced, non-coin petitive prograin me of voluntary activities that encourage personal discovery and growth, self- relia rice, persevera rice, responsibility to themselves and service to their community. There is no competition between Self-motivation 15 pa rticipants fundamental. The criterion for gaining an Award is individual improvement based on each candidate's starting point and potential. Pa rticipation is entirely voluntary and the individual participant has a completely free choice in the selection of the locally available options within the framework of the Award. A candidate has commented that it is not a question of whether she has gained a greater understanding of who she is but rather how she has grown in experience and maturity during the time she has been working towards her Gold Award. Organisational skills were developed so that the Gold Expedition ran smoothly with all group members making valuable contributions. The group worked well together without tension or stress. "We will always have fond memories of our experiences and will approach the future with confidence in our capabilities and skills. " Another said that she now had the determination to keep going no matter how hard the task. "Through the Award I made friends, met challenges and developed self-esteem.
