Titration Competition
On Saturday 25 May, 92 teams, including 4 from Brisbane Girls
Grammar School. participated in the Australian National Chemical Analysis Competition held at the University of Queensland. This wasjust one part of a nation-wide competition which Included some 236 teams from within Titration is a technique for deter minin the volumes in which solutions react It consists of the progressive addition of one solution to a known volume of the other until the reaction is coinple Although this sounds simple. it requir patience. extreme accuracy and considerable attention to detail to be done successfully Our four teams included Ansuhka de A1wis, Rebecca Tang. Kalpana Maharage. Joanne Ung, Karen tsu. Cheryn Goh. AMa Rahemtula. Stephanie Sheu. Angela Sheu, He Ien Chong. WinnY Shum. and Lucy Hall, with Me lissa Orig, acting as a reserve Although they did not win. all four teams performed well, with individua awards of Excellence going to loanne Ung for a perfect result and a Very Good award to Cheryn Goh for a resu within 0.50fo of the actual answer Queensland alone

In late July. twenty of our top Year 12 Biology students attended a lecture series hosted by the aueensland Institute of Medical Research During the series, research scientists and post graduate students gave short presentations on some of the current, cutting edge medical research being undertaken at the institute
Quasar Club
Elizabeth MCLellan. Catherine Anderson and Iennifer Mann are part of this Year's Quasar Club. This club is based at the University of Queensland and involves monthly lectures and workshops on advanced physics topics It is intended to give an intellectual home to gifted Physics students and is limited to about twenty-five students from around Queensland In early July, five of our top Year 11 Biology Students were selected to attend 'The 2002 Biofutures Forum' This Forum is held annually and is hosted jointly by the University of Queensland IUO) and the aueensland University of Technology IOUTl The Forum focused on biomedical engineering and provided students with a taste of tertiary lecture situations, hands on practical experiences. and interesting insights into both science research and controversial science Issues. During the Forum, students visited the Queensland institute of Medical Research 101MR), the disease research laboratory at The Princess Alexandra Hospital IPAj. Microbiology Labs at OUT. and Physiology Labs at U0 All students who attended the forum found it an interesting. worthwhile and enjoyable experience Biofutures Forum
Rio Tinto Australian Biology Olympiad
Late in 2001, after many hours of training. five of our current Year 12 students sat the National Qualifying Exams for the Rio Tinto Australian Biology Olympiad. The standard of the qualifying exam is always very high.
